Laboratory Report
Purpose
The purpose is to find the relationship between volume and mass.
Equipment Used
Graduated Cylinder, Clay, Triple Beam Balance
Procedure
1. Break clay into different sized pieces
2. Measure each piece’s mass and record it
3. Fill graduated cylinder with water
4. Record initial volume
5. Drop a piece of clay into the graduated cylinder
6. Subtract the new volume from the initial volume and record it down with the respective mass
7. Repeat steps 4-6 until every piece is measured

Data

Volume Mass (g)

(mL)
0mL 0g
3mL 6.5g
6mL 10.2g
8mL 15.2g
13mL 22.2g
Conclusion

From the data, it can be concluded that there is a linear relationship between volume and mass with a 99%
certainty and that the density of the clay is 1.696 g/mL, or 1696 kg/m^3. This is because the slope represents
mass over volume, the definition of density. This is a reasonable density as the clay sinks in the water because it
has a greater density than water (1000 kg/m^3). Error was minimized through isolating the clay from potential
debris which would’ve increased the mass and taking each measurement twice to ensure accuracy. Sources of
error includes having the water splash out when the clay piece was put in the graduated cylinder and having
water splash onto the sides of the graduated cylinder as well which both would have affected the volume
measured.
