Universal Design for Learning (UDL): The Universal Design for Learning principles can be
addressed to extend and support the learning experiences for every student by using Nearpod in
the classroom. Nearpod has the option to record voice memos for those who could benefit from
hearing instruction or clarification, also it is visually driven for those who appeal to visual aids. It is
self-paced and user friendly.

Lesson idea implementation: Students will be assigned an iPad with Nearpod already
downloaded. The instructor or teacher will introduce the idea of creating a slideshow for a specific
drug, such as tobacco or heroin, marijuana, alcohol, or cocaine. They will then choose an area of
interest that they would like to create a slideshow for. They will research different drugs that are
relevant to educating highschoolers and then create a 5 part powerpoint to upload in Nearpod. For
each drug, they must include an image, description of risk factors, signs and symptoms, and
identify how it can effect one’s life. They must site their sources at the end of the project. Each
drug chosen must be approved by the teacher. The students will be given 40 minutes to complete
this task. Student learning will be assessed by their final product on Nearpod, if the drugs have all
required components and are correct and ready to present. In order to extend the student learning
to a higher learning level, this assignment could require the students to create a survey or quiz
within the Nearpod, for example. To further learning, the teacher could also require the students
to present their Nearpod to the class and teach it to the best of their abilities. I will conclude the
lesson by reminding my students of the many benefits of learning about alcohol, tobacco and other
drugs, and how simple it can be to research and know real facts about drugs that are repeatable
and even sharable. I will provide feedback to students about their work by reviewing the Nearpod
projects that they create according to a rubric.

Reflective Practice: After designing this lesson idea, I feel the activities that I created could
impact student learning by empowering them with the ability to research and share real facts
about drugs, which could lead to them doing so repeatedly in the future, and possibly teaching
others the reality of drug addiction and it’s affects on health as well. This idea is designed as an
activity within a unit of study, perhaps focusing health education and drugs. With that in mind, to
further extend the lesson, it would be a good idea to assign one drug per lesson, or one type of
drug in different forms, like CBD oil and marijuana, or chew tobacco and cigarettes, etc. Other
technology tools that could further enhance this project would be allowing students to create a
PSA with iMovie about their drug.
