THESIS STATEMENT:

Freedom of the press or freedom of the media is the principle that communicate and express
through various mediums, including printed and electronic media, especially published materials,
should be considered a right to be exercised freely. Such freedom implies the absence of interference
from an overreaching state; its preservation may be sought through constitutional or other legal
protections.
With respect to governmental information, any government may distinguish which materials are public or protected from
disclosure to the public. State materials are protected due to either of two reasons: the classification of information as sensitive,
classified or secret, or the relevance of the information to protecting the national interest. Many governments are also subject
to sunshine laws or freedom of information legislation that are used to define the ambit of national interest.

INTRODUCTION-
The First Amendment guarantees freedom of press, but limits of this freedom take into account the
need for privacy and government exclusions. In many countries freedom of press in minimal, to
refrain from criticism of government and important public figures. In the U.S some people believe
that press, paparazzi(the photographers who follow famous people everywhere they go in order to take photographs
of them for newspapers and magazines), journalist and reporters have taken these rights too far, and are
intruding into the personal lives and confidential acts of the government. Freedom is the power to act,
speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. However hacking, following and
misleading the public is morally wrong, and in today's society it is normal for these occurrences to
happen. This article evidence will be provided to justify this fact regarding the press.

There is freedom of press, however there is freedom of speech, and whether you decide withdraw
information to a reporter is the choice of the person being questioned. In some cases one might
choose to not release certain information to the press. Because of this the press feels they need to
chase after answers. Between 2005 and 2007 there were several
phone hacking scandals in News International. Many employees
of the newspapers were accused of the phone hacking as well as
police bribery, and exercising improper influence in the pursuit of
stories. The hacking usually limited to celebrities, politicians and
members of the British Royal Family. But when investigations
reveled phones of a murdered schoolgirl, relatives of deceased
soldiers, and victims had been hacked the public were outraged
with the press. They had crossed the limit, giving no privacy or empathy to the deceased or their
relatives. Using their power in the freedom of press to intruded into the lives of celebrities, politicians
and even worse into the distressed families.

Not only has the press been know to secretly hack into the lives of people, but also to deliberately
follow and photograph individuals. In 1997 Princess Diana was killed in a car crash. It is said that the
reason the Princess was speeding because she was be followed by several paparazzi, and in fact some
of the first people at the scene were these paparazzi. However witnesses say that no one seemed to be
in a hurry to help the people in the car or to call the police. The paparazzi took several photos before
bothering to call an ambulance. At this time Princess Diana was still alive, and only died a few hours
later at the hospital. The ten photographers were arrested on suspicion of helping to cause the
accident and failing to assist the victims of the accident. In this situation the photographers put their
job to dig into the life of Princess Diana and her boyfriend before trying to save them from a horrific
accident. Just like in the phone hacking scandal these reporters show a total lack of compassion,
leaving people in danger to capture a story.

Lastly mass media coverage of the Newtown shooting raised several issues about the way in which
information is gathered and presented by the media. Because media sources want to be the first to
report groundbreaking news, they hurry to collected details of the story. Because of this there are
flaws in the information that is gathered, and these mistakes tend to be amplified by the media. In the
case of the Newton elementary school shooting the attacker was misidentified. Also soon after the
shooting at the Newtown elementary a photo was posted on the web of a line of terrified students
being led to safety by a policewomen. Reporters began to ask for interviews with these children
almost simultaneously. Many people were repulsed those journalists were talking to the children so
soon after the shooting. In my opinion and my others there is no amount of information could justify
doing that to the kids. The reporters merely wanted detail and background that could fill out the story,
and were not worried about the trauma the child might be going through.

Freedom of the press is going to far. Why does the media not fear hurting the feelings of Muslims,
when they respect the feelings of Jews and Christians? Why this hypocrisy? Why does the press not
make cartoons about how corrupt some Western politicians are? Wouldn’t that be a beautiful act of
democracy? There must be a reason for their boldness in one case and cowardice in the other. This
has nothing to do with protecting democracy and if it did have anything at all related with democracy
then who would want to live in democracies that continually provoke people to violent acts?
CONCLUSION:
These examples are proof that the press had indeed have gone too far. In intruding into the personal
lives of innocent people, in refusing to help a victim in an accident, as well as not taking into account
the how a child might be feeling after a offend event. The press only cares about the story, and will go
to any limits to make sure that they get it. Press a friend or a foe? The press is something we mostly
definitely need to keep informed about what is happening where you are living and around the world.
However the press needs to regain control of the way in which they gather information and present it
to the public. Otherwise the press will remain a foe, and continue to go too far, in their pursuit to
inform.
