Objectives/learning outcomes for the material:
How to identify and know the difference between similes and metaphors How to use them in a sentence or paragraphs Able to describe what is getting compared to in their similes and metaphors
Materials to prepare before teaching:
Prepare five to six similes and metaphors as examples to explain Create a table chart with the similes and metaphors Background Information: These students will learn two types of figurative speech similes and metaphors. These two types of figurative speech are very similar to each other and are used very often when we speak and compare two unlike things. Similes and Metaphors are important because it makes writing, reading, and speaking more interesting and lyrical. They are also used when the writing is boring and dry. Figurative language sparks the reader's imagination and help them picture a scene in their heads and still effective getting information out. This will help these students with their writing making it a lot more interesting, complex and show that they have knowledge in many ways of writing.
Instructional Strategy (15 minutes):
Write down on the board theses similes: Light as a feather Jumpy like a flea Fast as lightning Abby fights like a dog Slow as a turtle She is funny like a clown
Teacher will explain in detail what a simile is
Teacher will explain in detail what a metaphor is Teacher will make sure students know the difference between the two Students will have to write a five sentence paragraph using both metaphors and similes in class Students can work in partners of two and turn in at the end of class Teacher will walk around helping and answering any questions that they have Students will write another five sentence paragraph for homework by themselves, any topic they want as long they use minimum of three similes and three metaphors Underline the metaphors and circle the similes
