Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: The Regions of South Carolina

Objectives:
 Students will be able to recognize the six different regions of South Carolina
 Students will be able to describe the climate, physical features, and natural resources of
each region
State Standard: 3-1.1 Categorize the six landform regions of South Carolina—the Blue Ridge,
the Piedmont, the Sand Hills, the Inner Coastal Plain, the Outer Coastal Plain, and the Coastal
Zone— according to their climate, physical features, and natural resources.
Context: It is a standard in third grade to know all the six regions of South Carolina. Students
must know about these regions different climates, the physical features and the types of natural
resources found there. This lesson will help familiarize students with all those aspects. It gives
them the opportunity of visiting these places without having to travel to them. This is the first
lesson that students will have for social studies. To learn about South Carolina history, they first
must know the geographic features of it. After this lesson, we will follow the state standards and
work on describing the characteristics of significant areas of South Carolina.
Data: For this lesson, students will be grouped up in groups of five. These groups will be based
on their advancement in social studies. There will be a lower group, a middle group, and an
advanced group. This will give me the opportunity to give more of my focus to my high needs
group. These groups will be based off a pre-assessment given at the beginning of the school year.
This pre-assessment covered every social studies SC standard including the six regions of South
Carolina

Procedures:
Introduction (10 minutes): Students will take out their social studies text books and be directed
to the whiteboard. Displayed here will be a map of South Carolina. From this point I will call on
students and let them tell me about the different parts of SC they’ve visited or know about, and
they will describe what the area is like. After this I will introduce the six regions of SC,
describing them briefly, then start grouping students and giving them further instructions.

Teacher Directed (15 minutes): In this groups, the students and I will read along in the textbook
about the six different regions. I will give them a blank sheet of printer paper and have them fold
it into six different sections. They will label each section according to the different regions. As
we’re reading I will have a set of guided reading questions to help the students better understand
the content. Each time we stop to answer a question, the students will write the answer according
to each section and this will serve as their notes. Questions can fall along the lines of: “What
natural resources can be found in the Piedmont”, “What is the climate like in the Inner Coastal
Zone”, or “Would the Sandhills be a great place to grow crops?”.

Collaborative (15 minutes): In this part of the lesson students will remain in their groups and go
to a set of desks with a hands-on activity. Each student will receive an activity, but the students
will work together to complete it. This activity will include two worksheets. One will have a
blank map of South Carolina on it with the six regions highlighted in six different colors. The
next worksheet will have the names of the six regions along with six description boxes about
each. The student’s task will be to cut out the six regions along with their right description, and
then paste them on the map in the right section. After they are finished the students will check
each other’s work to make sure each of them is on the right track.

Independent Digital (15 minutes): In this section students will pick up their iPads and a pair of
headphones. They will have the option to go to their desk or sit on the floor. Here the students
will go to the YouTube app and watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxjgCPWLtY4.
If the students had not gotten a chance to finish or began filling out their six regions chart that
they got from my teacher directed station, now would be the perfect time to finish it.

Closure (15 minutes): Students will return to their desk as we wrap everything up. I will go
around the classroom asking students to tell me one thing they learned from either section. As a
class we will complete an exit slip. I will use a large piece of notebook paper separated in six
sections (regions of SC) to write down their responses. Once we have at least five facts for each
section, I will then pull up the Six Regions Song for the students to listen too and that is how I
will end my lesson.
Rationale:
1. Six Regions Song• This media is used in the closure of my lesson. I chose this piece of
multimedia, because I know that songs are a great way to learn and remember information.
Whenever I want to remember something I try to turn it into a song to help me. Along with the
song is a music video that backs up everything that the song is saying. This supports student
learning by giving them a visual of what they are hearing. One thing that caught my eye in the
video was that they used puzzle piece when they talked about each section. Overall, I chose this
song and I chose to use it at the end because it tied up everything we learned and put it in a fun
way of learning.
2. YouTube App • This app is used in the independent digital rotation. YouTube offers over a
million different videos and a great variety of educational videos to choose from. I chose this
piece of multimedia because are a great way for students to learn new information. This video
will pick up on the things that I missed in my own lesson and review other content that I went
over. This video also supports students by giving them a visual of the six regions. Overall, I
chose this song and I chose to use it at the end because it tied up everything we learned and put it
in a fun way of learning.
