1. Standards
A. Content Standards
a. NYS Social Studies Standards
12.G4b: Allowing citizens to vote does not ensure that a
system is a democracy. Open, safe, and honest elections
are essential to a democratic system. Engaged and
informed citizens should know the mechanics associated
with voting, including when major local, state, and national
elections are held, how to register to vote, who currently
holds each office, who is running for office, and what the
central issues are pertaining to that election.
b. NYSED 7 Standards
i. Element VI.1: Teachers uphold professional standards of
practice and policy as related to students’ rights and
teachers’ responsibilities.
Indicator d. Teachers advocate, model, and manage safe,
legal, and ethical use of information and technology,
including respect for intellectual property and the
appropriate documentation of sources.
B. Technology Standards: ISTE Standards: Digital Citizen
a. 2b. Students engage in positive, safe, legal and ethical behavior
when using technology, including social interactions online or
when using networked devices.
Technology Used:
Web based Free Online Citation Guide Purdue Owl
https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/resources.html
Web Based Free Online Newspaper Generator

2. Lesson Objectives
A. Content Area Objective
a. Students will be able to explain the civilian revolt that took place in
Athens, Tennessee in 1946 as a result of a corrupt election
system by generating a newspaper article about the event.
B. Technology Objective
a. Students will be able to properly cite the article they choose to use
to generate their newspaper article.
4. Introduce Learning Activity
a. Content Area
i. The teacher will ask students to stand up and stretch as a bellringer. The
teacher will praise students for how far they have come this semester and
ask them to close their eyes and take three deep breaths. As the students
breath the teacher will ring a singing bowl, which was previously hidden,
to alleviate stress and create a safe environment. Next the teacher will
give students a short 1 minute summary on the event they are going to be
learning about tonight. Students will be told to think like journalist tonight.
It will be their job to report about this event that nobody knows about
using a timeline of events and primary sources from the time period to
create a newspaper article. They will also be introduced to proper citation
of the press source they use by using Purdue owl, students will be given
the choice of citation format they are comfortable with.
b. Technology
i. The teacher will inform students that they will be using the timeline for the
content information, a newspaper generator website for their assessment,
Purdue Owl for their citations. The teacher will navigate through the
website to help students find all the weblinks they need to complete their
task. When students have chosen what “press” source they want to use
the teacher will navigate Purdue Owl on the screen to help students find
the proper citation guide.
5. Provide Information
a. Content Area
i. There will be two sources of content students will be exposed to. The first
will be a timeline of events from the day the civil revolt took place. The
second will be “press” primary sources from the time period. Students will
have time to navigate the timeline and pick among the sources to read
and pull information from.
b. Technology
i. Students will navigate a digital timeline to discover information about an
event they probably have never heard about using technology they might
not be familiar with. The “press” primary sources will be provided on a
PDF. document provided on the website. Purdue Owl will be accessed by
students which provides them with a guide to creating citations for primary
newspaper sources.
6. Provide Practice
a. Content Area
i. Students will manipulate the information they encounter on both the
timeline and from the “press” primary source documents to create a
newspaper article. The event relates to the objective because students
will learn of the corrupt practices and respond as journalist would. Once
all the students have accessed their sources from the website the teacher
will explain to students that they have the rest of the day to complete their
newspaper article, reminding students that they must use at least one of
the primary sources and provide a citation. Then the teacher will give the
rest of the time for students to finish their newspaper and send it to the
teachers email.
b. Technology
i. The students will be using an online citation guide, a digital timeline and
a newspaper generator to explain the content. Students will practice with
the technology listed to generate their own story about the events in
Athens, Tennessee in 1946. Students can create multiple newspaper
articles to convey different biases manipulating different information they
have accessed from the technology sources provided on the website.
7. Providing Feedback
The teacher will provide feedback to students by using proximity examine student
work and provide praise. The teacher will provide oral feedback to students to express
concerns, praise, questions, answers and suggestions to students. This feedback will be
fluid and every student will be spoken to at least once to create a safe and constructive
environment. The teacher will remind students to email their newspaper article to the
email written on the board in the front of the class.
8. Review
The teacher will ask for student attention with 3 minutes left in the class. The
teacher will have predetermined during the feedback time which students would
like to share the newspaper article. The teacher will ask these students to read
their articles to the class in their best news reporter voice. Finally, the teacher will
ask students to paste their citations in a good document under their chosen
format and to compare their citations to their classmates who chose the same
format.

3. Methods of Assessment
a. Formal: The newspaper article students create will be used to formally assess
student progress toward the content objective. Students will need to provide their
citation on their newspaper article so the technology objective will also be
assessed using the newspaper article.
b. Informal: The teacher will informally assess students progress to the objectives
using proximity throughout the lesson and by checking the citation page students
completed as a class.
