A Reflection on my Major Issues Essay

Our third and final essay was about a current, ongoing issue in our discourse community.

At this point we had already written about our discourse community, as well as translating an

academic article into a public genre. I wrote an essay titled Gender Discrimination in the Law

Workplace. I wrote about this topic and issue because I am passionate about it, and the more

people are educated, the more hopeful I am for change. I also really wanted to educate myself on

gender discrimination in the law workplace. By doing the research for this essay, as well as being

able to put my own opinion in it, I was super exciting about writing it.

I learned a lot about gender discrimination, as well as the field of law and their view on

sexism. This paper had to be five or six pages long, and that is why I chose something that I was

passionate about. It was really easy to write five pages of information on this topic; I could have

written five more. After writing my major issues paper, I learned that researching my topic takes

as long, or longer, than the actual process of writing. By researching and writing this essay, I was

astonished and disgusted about how apparent and alive sexism is today, in and out of the law

workplace. It is a part of the majority of workplaces. This assignment made it clear that I will

always be passionate about this topic, and that change needs to happen and happen now. This

assignment also taught me that researching for the best scholarly articles is a lot easier once you

know how to research and the strategies involved in it.
