Title of the Lesson: “A Child Called It”, Dave Pelzer, 1995, 8th grade

Multicultural theme: Socio-Economic, Abusive Home


Materials: The book “A Child Called It” by Dave Pelzer, white board, dry erase markets,
notebooks, pencils, computer, projector, dictionaries.
Standard(s): Reading standard for Literature Grade 8 student

explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text”
2. Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course
of the text, including its relationship to the characters, setting, and plot; provide an
objective summary of the text.
3. Analyze how particular lines of dialogue or incidents in a story or drama propel the
action, reveal aspects of a character, or provoke a decision.
Objective(s): Student will be able to anlyze the develpopmetn of characters and plot, and propose
ways to identify scenario in real life situations with solutions.
Procedure:

Introduce: Watch the video “Don’t Hate be Kind” http://tv.ccsd.net/watch?v=sPTGwMSBv85A


Ask the students “What was this video about?” “What other reasons are kids bullied about” If
mentioned that students might be bullied because of the way they are dressed, or they are dirty,
ask “Have you ever thought why these kids might be dirty? What might be going on at home?”
Have students look up definition of child neglect, and signs to identify the neglect. Have open
discussion of what signs at school can help us identify if a child needs help

Read: Reading book individually as homework and then


Discuss: discussions in group settings to review what we have read. Analyze the character
developments.

Activities: Complete bi-weekly quizzes on what we have read, characters, signs that indicate
abuse, and household culture explanations.

Complete Final Essay questions

What kind of abuse did Dave suffer?


How did Dave’s home life impact his school?
 What signs indicated there was something wrong in his home life?
How and why was Dave treated at school?
Research the percentage of children in Dave’s age that are in a abusive household.
How can we help prevent this.
