Chapter 10

Analysing the characters


a) First, write the character or characters that said or did what is described in
the character column for each of the following.
b) Then, write at least one appropriate adjective (e.g. responsible, thoughtful,
kind, understanding, mean, etc.) to describe what is said or done

1. He cannot say anything or even cry

2. They pull Richard into their house because


they know how much Mr. Kilmer means to him.

3. He searches for German machine gun nests


in the tall grass as bullets fly all around him.

4. He clutches the unsent letter to his chest and


sobs.

Mr. Kilmer or his desire to write poetry.

6. He panics and does not want his poem to be


published in the newspaper.

7. He wants to tell his father about his poem in


the newspaper but he simply cannot.

8. He puts his arm around his father’s


shoulders when his father cries.

9. He helps to improve Richard’s poem with his


knowledge of farming and the land
10. He enjoys Richard’s poems and comments
that they are good.

A precious little world has died.
