Team Kilo Research and Explanation

One of the most dangerous things about space travel is the large amount of space
radiation that is produced by our sun and all other stars. Space radiation causes electrons to be
stripped from atoms as the atom approaches speeds up to the speed of light. Ionizing radiation
is a very dangerous type of radiation that astronauts need protection from. This radiation can
move through substances and alter them as it passes through. NASA is testing various methods
to protect astronauts from solar radiation such as having sensors on a spacecraft that will alert
the crew when a radiation event has occurred giving them 30 minutes to a few hours to take
shelter in the space crafts cargo area. They have also designed a vest that astronauts will wear
that will protect organs that are vulnerable to radiation. It is clear that NASA is doing a lot to
protect its astronauts, regardless of how they do it, it is definitely a problem that needs to be
solved.
To protect the astronauts from space radiation, we are going to create a force field that
will flow through towers that will be set around the space colony. The towers will emit a shield
that will block out all of the harmful radiation but still let light into the colony. For our
demonstration we will use a plastic shield to represent the force field since we can not flow
actual energy through the towers here. The kind of plastic that we are using for the shield is
called a photochromic lens, which is basically the lens used in glasses that tint due to sunlight.
We will use a few other plastics to show why our lens is the best Shiite and to show this we will
use a uv light. The lens will allow light to pass through but will bounce back all of the uv rays.
That way the colony is able to get light, without the harmful radiation.
