Unit 5 – Lesson 9: SWBAT complete the square to find the center and radius of a circle given by an equation

Do Now:

Completing the square to find center and radius of a circle in General Form

Steps to Complete the Square:

Step 1: Move the constant term (D) to the right hand side.

Step 2: To find the needed value for the perfect square trinomial, take 1/2 of the coefficient of the middle

terms (x-term (B) and y-term (C)), square them, and add the values to both sides of the equation.

Step 3: Factor the perfect square trinomials.

Do Now:

a) Center: (0,0) Radius: 10

b) Center: (5,2) Radius: 6

c) Center: (-2, 11) Radius: 1

Lesson

2) a) x =3 & -13 (b) x = 7 & -1

3) a) (x-2)2 + (y-4)2=25 (b) center: (2,4) Radius: 5

4)

a) (x+4)2 + (y-2)2=4 center: (-4,2) Radius: 2

b) (x-9)2 + (y-5)2=100 center: (9,5) Radius: 10

c) (x+1)2 + (y-1)2=9 center: (-1,1) Radius: 3

d) (x-7)2 + (y-2)2=1 center: (7,2) Radius: 1

5)

a) (x)2 + (y-5)2=16 center: (0,5) Radius: 4

b) (x-1)2 + (y+4)2=9 center: (1,-4) Radius: 3

c) (x-1)2 + (y-3)2=25 center: (1,3) Radius: 5

d) (x-2)2 + (y+3)2=16 center: (2,-3) Radius: 4
