Having a social media has become a new lifestyle, even a new necessity. Nowadays, it is rarely
found a person who doesn’t have a social media account. It seems like social media is another world
that we have to live in. However, there are some social issues aroused because of social media. This
essay will talk more about some social issues caused by Instagram.
The first issue is people will become very self-conscious. It is when someone is very worried
about what other people think about him/her. Well, it can’t be denied that Instagram feed and stories
now depict the life of users because people like to post every single thing that they encounter in their
life which is somehow intentionally exposed to others. They want to create an ‘image’ to shape how
other people see them because indeed it is true that people in Instagram will give a hoot about it. Some
people even make effort to make their feed look aesthetic and harmonious with the right filter (even
you have to buy the filter). They don’t want any ‘outlier’ image in their feed. They become worried when
their post receives a few likes. I have a lot of friends who have two Instagram accounts, one for their
‘superficial’ image, and the other is for expressing themselves restricted to their inner circle friend.
The second issue is people will like to compare themselves to others and envy a life that may
not be attainable. Well, individuals only share a small percentage of their lives online. It is important to
remember that an Instagram may just be a reflection of the "best" parts of a person's life and isn't an
accurate representation of them as a whole. It is imperative that that social media does not always
portray the whole story. The "perfect" life of someone make other feel inferior to another person.
The third issue is people will become very judgmental. They give opinion based on what they
see, not the reality. The latest example is the celebrity Nana Mirdad posted an image of her with her
adolescent son and daughter in one bath tub. People commented that it is not proper for a mother and
adolescent son had a bath together. In fact, they just got back from swimming and soaked in warm
water to heat their bodies with swimsuit put on. Other example is celebrity Instagram Sakayuv who liked
to create a parody video on Instagram. Because of people’s bad comment, he left the whole social
media world.
