Childhood
◦ Growing up, Walt's childhood was not idyllic. His father
was a strict disciplinarian who administered "corrective"
beatings to Walt and his brother, Roy.
◦ Walt found a way to escape his father's brutality
through drawing.
Mickey Mouse
◦ The inspiration for Mickey
Mouse came from an actual
mouse that lived in his office in
Kansas City.
◦ Walt Disney was originallly
going to name the
mouse Mortimer. But Walt's
wife, Lillian, suggested that he
name the mouse Mickey.
Disney chose to take his wife's
advise.
Disneyland
◦ Disney had always dreamed of
creating an amusement park
based on his characters, but had
trouble with financing for the
project.
◦ In the early 1950s, he purchased
an orange grove near Anaheim,
California, and finance the
construction of a 185-acre
