Teaching Philosophy

As a dancer, choreographer, and educator, I teach with energy, encouragement, high expectation
of self and students, and integrity, all while creating a safe and secure environment that promotes
discovery through dance. When facilitating an educational experience for an advanced dancer,
student new to dance, or anyone in between, I seek to provide meaningful opportunities for
students to connect their experiences in the dance class with other aspects of their lives, with
other core disciplines, self-awareness and on becoming a productive citizen. I strongly believe
that all students can dance and have an appreciation for the Arts.

I strive to stimulate coherent understanding of body alignment, language of movement, and

student’s exploration of choreographic development, aesthetic knowledge, confidence in self-
expression on and off the stage as well as in the dance room. I also hope to build a supportive,
collaborative learning community within the classroom, that is inclusive, student centered and is
a respectful educational environment to engage my diverse community.

As a dance teacher, I strive to continue to develop as an artist and educator. In an attempt to be

the best teacher, I can be, I maintain my own physical practice and seek additional professional
and educational opportunities to perfect my craft. I continue to learn from my students and co-
faculty daily and they aid me in becoming a better teacher.

In nineteen year, I have been able to see so many students blossom into not only amazing
dancers but confident, productive, driven and accomplished men and women.

Writer Vivian Greene states it best “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass; it’s about
learning to dance in the rain.
