Trade unites the world in a common brotherhood

of reciprocal mutual dependence and interest.

James A. Garfield.

Free trade agreements allow countries to exchange goods or services free of tariff restrictions or

with very little interest, which means that the product to be exported or imported is marketed

abroad and this increases the economy of both countries.

A few years ago Colombia carried out the FTA with the first world power and this was a boost

for the increase of exports and imports between both countries, this treaty was approved on

October 12, 2011 and came into force on May 15, 2012.

The FTA between Colombia and the United States is a negotiation which I join the effort of

dialogues and agreements treated for more than 22 months which the Colombian government

wanted to give merit to its products in a market as demanding as the North American and in

addition to that the which would receive special treatment by being part of the ATPA and

ATPDEA (Andean preference law and Andean trade promotion and drug eradication law), which

is a US law that allows tariff-free access to more than 6000 items of Colombian products to the

market. This treaty gives merit to the efforts of small and large Colombian producers which

generate a positive change in the foreign market as well as in the interior of the country and

reveals and highlights the unique qualities that represent our country, this treaty demonstrates the

exclusivity of the Colombian export and the desired products are markets abroad. This

commercial integration with the largest market in the world makes Colombia a potential exporter

and makes us a focus of foreign investment which ensures the economic growth of our country.

Some studies show that the growth of the economy may be 4.2% as a result of the FTA and

generate employment at least 380 thousand jobs in a period of 5 years from the effectiveness of

the same. A study conducted by the bank of the republic estimated that in the period of 2007 and

2010 investment flows grew by US $ 2,135 million.

Now with this the agreement was represented as follows:

23 chapters and several annexes, the chapters include general provisions, customs procedures,

cross-border services, financial services, rules of origin, sanitary and phytosanitary measures,

investments, among others.

One of the sectors that benefited most from this treaty was agriculture because its tariff levels

were very low and even some products did not have restrictions for export.

Advantage:

 Economic growth of the countries

 Growth of the level of import and export of the country

 Generation and increase of employment

 Access to lower priced products

Disadvantages

 preferences to acquire foreign products to nationals.

 unequal distribution of the advantages of the FTA

 Affection of the agricultural sector since by not presenting tariffs for export or import this
sector will have to increase more its production and its profits will be minimal

Conclusions

 free trade agreements are made for the exchange of goods and services where the parties
must be benefited or affected

 The FTA helps increase the economy of a country

 The sectors that are most benefited by the treaties are those that present less tariffs for
their exports trade and market exchange
