‘The American writer Edgar Allan Poe was born in
Boston, in the tte of Mastachueets, on Janwary 19th
1809. He wrote poetry and stories of horror and mystery.
Edgar Allan Poe had a hanviome face and gray eyes. He
‘was quiet and shy. He didnot talk easly to people who he
did not know.
Edgar's parents, David and Elza, were theater actors,
‘When Edgar was three years ck his mother died, and
Edge went to live in Richmond, Virgina. He lived with
John and Frances Allan. Mr Allan was 2 merchant who
sold eobacco. Jobin Allan looked after Edgar, and the boy
became a member of Mr Allan’ family. Mr Allan sat
Edgac' fostecfather. Lace, Edgar took John Allan’s last
‘name as his own middle name,
In 1815, Edgae went with the Alans to Britain. He
attended a school in Loran for five year. Edgar returned
to America with the Allans in 1820. From 1821, he
attended a school in Richmond, Virginia. He got good
srades for Latin, poetry, acting and swimming
In 1826, Bdgar attended che University of Virginia, He
seudied languages and he was a good student. But while
Eajgac was atthe university, he had very litle money. So he
gambled. He played games to win money. But he di not
win enough money and soon he was in debt. Edgar owed
‘money t0 many people. His foster-father would not gay
Eajgars debs. Edgar and his fosterfacher quarreled. A year
lates, Edgar left the universe.
‘Edgar joined the U.S. Army. He used the name Edgar
A. Perry. In 1827, he published his frst book of poetry—

Edgar was in the U.S, Army fortwo years. First he was

1 private and lacer, he became a sergeant, John Allan did
‘not want Edgar tobe an ordinary soldier. He wanted Edgar
to be an ofices In 1829, Mr Allan paid 2 sum ef money to
the army, and Eagar left. Fora few months, Edgar went
live in Baleimore, Maryland, with his aunt, Mrs Maria Poe
Cleram,
In 1830, Edgar’ foster father sent him eo West Point
Milicary Academy in Vieginia. Edger quarreled with his
fester father about this. Edgar did not want to attend West
Point. He wanted to write books and poetry. But Jobn
Allan did not want Edgar to be a writer.
Edgar thought of a plan. He would noc complete his
dies correctly. He became a bad officer. A bad officer
could nor stay in the Academy. Edgar knew this. On
March 6th, 1831, Edgar wns dismised from West Point.
Edgar went back to Baleimore and lived with his aunt
and her daughter, Viginia Clem. He wrote more poetry
and he also started to write stories. In 1833, Edgar wor
filty dollars in a writing competition. The prize was for his
shore story, MS Found in « Bott. (MS means manuscript, a
piece of writing)
John Allan died in 1834. And the next year, Edgar
became the editor of the Souther Literary Messenger in
Richmond. He read articles, shor stories and books. Ther

twenty-seven-year-old Edgar mactied his cousin, Virginia
‘Clemo. She was thirteen years old
‘ieginia, Edgar, and his aunt moves co New York City
‘in January 1897. In 1838, they moved again. They went ¢o
Philadelphia in New Jersey. In that year, Edgar's novel, The
"Narrative of Archer Gordon Pym, was published. He worked
as an editor for Burton's Gentleman's Magazine and
