Initial approach to the patient: performs hand hygiene, introduces him/herself, explains
what he/she will be doing, obtains consent, asks about pain, positions and exposes
patient correctly
Inspection: performs general observation of patient and environment, mentions
presence/absence of environmental aids/devices, obvious haemodynamic instability,
respiratory rate/distress
Hands: examines for clubbing, stigmata of infective endocarditis, tar staining,
xanthomata, peripheral cyanosis, examines pulse (rate, rhythm, character, volume),
checks for radio-radial delay and collapsing pulse, offers to check for radio-femoral
delay (do not permit student to perform this), offers to check blood pressure (do not
permit student to perform this).
Head/Neck: examines for xanthelesma, corneal arcus, scleral icterus, malar flush, high
arched palate, poor dentition, peripheral cyanosis, central cyanosis.
Palpates carotid artery
Auscultates carotid arteries for bruits
Examines jugular venous pulsation
Performs hepatojugular reflux
Student offers to examine praecordium (PLEASE MOVE STUDENT ON AT THIS
POINT)
Examines lung bases
Appropriate dress, neatly dressed and wearing a clean short-sleeved white coat
