SPACES AND SEGREGATION

It is important to reach the architectural program of a project. To find services buildings and amenities
leads us to the program of a project. Defining functions of a cadet college is important for the success of
a project. Architectural specifications of a building their interrelations need to be focused on. To execute
a project, it requires to make a summary of spaces and their architectural specification.

Covered areas
Covered areas consist of mainly academic and residential activities. It can be divided in academic block,
staff residencies and student hostel. These areas need to be designed in response to their special
character. The following activities needs to be addressed.

Academic activities:
Academic is the most important activity that plays a vital role in determining the future of a cadet. This
includes all spaces that can be used to teach the students. These may include Class room, lecture theaters,
science laboratories, library, teacher’s staff room, ancillary facilities (stores, toilets, lockers etc.) Circulation
(Staircases, corridors). etc.

Classrooms:
There are two kinds of class rooms. In a traditional class room, a teacher performs and the students looks
at the teacher. It only supports the typical methods and means of teaching. But today teaching have
changed a lot. And new means and mediums of teaching are being used to deliver knowledge. The basic
element in every college building is space where learning activities are carried out and in class the students
spend the greatest proportion of their college time.
General Requirement of a classroom design
➢ Various arguments have been advanced in favor of the square classrooms including
2 an ordinary class room

➢ Sufficient space is needed near the front room for setting up audio-visual equipment
➢ Ceiling should be of 10 feet high minimum
➢ Light from windows should, if possible, come over a pupil’s left shoulder
➢ Ceiling and walls should be acoustically treated
➢ Classroom should be located in quit zone, away from noisy outdoor areas. Darkness curtains
or light tight blinds should be provided for light control in all teaching areas.
Lecture Theaters:
Lecture theaters are also important part of the academic block having some extra facilities then class rooms.
The room should have a projection booth and at least suitable stand and electrical outlet for the projector.
The use of raised platform for the teacher has advantages in increased visibility.

Seats should be placed at neither a distance from screen not less than twice nor more than six times the
width of the screen image to be viewed. The angle of the elevation from the eye to the upper part of an
object on the screen should not less than 30 degrees
Laboratories:

3science labs layouts

Science laboratories are mainly of four kinds in the college like Biology, physics, chemistry and computer.
The equipment itself establishes the provisions of the specialized laboratories for drill, lecture and
demonstrations. These should be properly exhausting ventilated and illuminated. Laboratories should have
utility cross available at any spot.
Computer labs
The purpose of a computing facility will greatly impact most design aspects including room layout,
computer hardware, printing systems, projection/presentation systems, etc. Consider what the primary
use of this facility will be:

• Open computer use - students come and go to use the computers for assignments or
projects
• Instructional computing facility - facility is used for instruction lead by a single person
• Collaborative work - facility is used by students in a group project setting
• Laboratory work - computers are used for data collection or in a laboratory setting

Libraries:
The functional characteristics of the library are the acquiring, cataloging indexing, Storing, retrieving, use
and restoring of information in many forms.
The essential functions of college library which must be considered in planning of college building are:
➢ To provide a suitable place for the storage of the books and periodicals where they will be
easily available to those who have use for them,
➢ To provide a place books and periodicals may be read and studied under the quit and
comfortable conditions.
➢ To provide means of convenience for the leading books and periodicals according for
circulation and relieving materials upon their return.
➢ To provide means and convenience means or display or promotions of material in order to
attract the interest of cadets and stimulate their use.
➢ Essential library spaces: A complete school library requires as a minimum Reading room,
office space, work space, storage space for books, storage space for other material etc.
Administrative activities:
The administrative activity has a chief role in any institute. In Cadet College careful planning is needed
because strong administration hold is everywhere. Location of office:
The location of given office is determined only in part by the need for expansibility. Other factors that
should be considered are Accessibility to person who will come to the office.
Important functional affinities with other parts of the building.
Other offices:
In Cadet College there is need for other offices depending upon the nature and organization of its
administrative and supervision staff. These might include offices for vice principal, adjutant, housemaster,
clerical staff/accountant. It is convenient to have all these persons in one block because it permits quick
access to record and facilitate communication.
A space with seating capacity for 20-25 person around the conference table will serve parents, community
groups, faculty groups, visitor groups, placed close to principal’s office for easier access.
Recreational Activities:
Games and sports of co-curricular activity and directly related to training of character and personality. With
this objective in view, two types of facilities are provided to the students in the college these are
Outdoor Games:
Playfields for the football, cricket, hockey, basketball, tennis, badminton, jogging tracks rifle range etc.
Playfields comprise open space and facilities for playing games, resulting in physical exertion e.g. Football,
Cricket, Basketball, Hockey, etc. The playfields should not be at such position so as to be a source of noise
disturbance to library, classrooms or study areas.

Indoor Games:

Squash courts, Table tennis, Snooker and badminton court etc.

Communal Activities:
Communal activity also important for healthy environment in a college
Auditoriums:
The auditorium is frequently used as center for communal affairs. It should be designed and equipped that
it may be used effectively by all groups.

Cafeterias:
It is a place for serving light refreshment to the students in the break or free time. The cafeteria served many
more functions that nearly feeding the people. According to the one philosophy it is a centrally socializing
space. Given below is an example of cafeteria of a college.

➢ Hostels for students
➢ Residencies for teacher and staff.
Student hostels are constructed in blocks with facilities like kitchen, dining hall, common room and
bedrooms with study area. Where as family residencies are built in a colony.

Hostels:
The residential spaces include dormitories, dining hall, services of dinning, house master house common
room, indoor games facilities, combined toilets and showers etc.the image explains the circulation of a
hostel.

Dormitories:
Each dormitory is equipped with beds, lockers to keep personal belongings of the students and chair and

depending upon their demand. Minimum area required for a single bed room is 80 to 100 square feet. It
is also requiring to add a study table and cupboard for each student. Good ventilation and sunlight of a
room is a basic for every place to make it livable and make student living, fresh and efficient

a hostel with single bed cubicles.
