Tutorial Worksheet 5

Question 1 Consider the set A  {,{}} . Which of the following statements is true?

 
a)    ; b)   A ; c)   A ; d) {{}}  A ; e) {}  A ; f) {}  A ; g) {,{}}  A ;
h) {,{}}  A

Question 2 (a) List the elements of each of the following sets:

(i) 𝐴 = {𝑥| 𝑥 is a multiple of 3 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 8 and 20}.
(ii) 𝐶 = {𝑧| 𝑧 is a prime factor of 42}.
(b) Formulate a set-builder notation for each of the following sets:
(i) 𝐴 = {−1,1}; (ii) 𝐴 = {1,3,7,15,31}.

Question 3 Consider the sets 𝐴 = {0,1,3} and 𝐵 = {−1,1}. Obtain the power sets 𝒫𝐴 and 𝒫𝐵. Also find
𝒫(𝐴 ∩ 𝐵) and 𝒫(𝐴 ∪ 𝐵). Do we have here that:

(i) 𝒫(𝐴 ∩ 𝐵) = (𝒫𝐴) ∩ (𝒫𝐵)?

(ii) 𝒫(𝐴 ∪ 𝐵) = (𝒫𝐴) ∪ (𝒫𝐵)?

Question 4 Make use of a Venn diagram to solve this problem: There are 40 UNAM students at a party.
Of them, 7 are not registered for any subject in the Science Faculty. For the rest, it is known that 12 of
them take Mathematics, 20 take Physics, 18 take Biology. It is also known that 5 take all three subjects, 8
take both Mathematics and Physics, and 7 take Physics and Biology. Find how many students take:

a) Mathematics and Biology

b) Mathematics and Biology but not Physics
c) Mathematics and Physics but not Biology
d) Physics and Biology but not Mathematics
e) One subject only

Question 5 First make use of Venn Diagrams to understand the problem, then, using clear mathematical
reasoning, prove each of the following, where 𝐴, 𝐵 and 𝐶 are sets (in the context of a universal set 𝑈):

(a) If 𝐵 ⊆ 𝐴, then 𝐴 ∪ 𝐵 = 𝐴, (b) If 𝐴 ∪ 𝐵 = 𝐴, then 𝐵 ⊆ 𝐴, (c) (𝐴 ∩ 𝐵)𝑐 = 𝐴𝑐 ∪ 𝐵𝑐 .

Question 6 Let be ℕ, ℤ, ℚ and ℝ be the sets of natural numbers, integers, rationals and real numbers,
respectively. State whether or not each of the following statements is true:
3
(a) ℚ ⊆ ℤ, (b) √2 ∈ ℕ, (c) −0.65 ∈ ℚ, (d) ℤ ⊆ ℝ ∖ ℚ, (e) ℚ ⊆ ℝ, (f) 𝜋 ∈ ℝ, (g) √3 ∈ ℚ, (h) 33 ∈ ℕ.
