The Origin and Historical Development of Jazz Music and Jazz Education in Turkey

Abstarct

Jazz is known as a kind of music that is played all around the world and finds itself a large
audience. Although there is so much interest, there are not many studies on jazz music
rooting, development and jazz education in Turkey.
The aim of this research is to show how the origins of Jazz music, which has succeeded in
pursuing the masses, are shaped in the past, how this music class has shaped in history and in
which way jazz education is given in Turkey. In this research using qualitative research
method, literature review was utilized in the collection phase of data. The collected data were
analyzed and analyzed by using descriptive analysis method.
The research suggests that the origins of jazz music have various forms and types, such as
Work Song, Field Holler, Spiritual, Gospel, Blues, Ragtime, Swing, Bebop, Cool, Hard Bop,
Free Jazz, Rock, It has come to the conclusion that musicians such as Luis Armstrong, Charlie
Parker, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington are contributors to the
development of this music genre. It is also found that the number of jazz education
institutions in Turkey is very low.

Özet

Caz müzik, dünyanın her yerinde seslendirilen ve kendisine geniş dinleyici kitlesi bulan bir
müzik türü olarak bilinmektedir. Bu kadar ilgi görmesine rağmen caz müziğin kökeni,
gelişimi ve Türkiye’de Caz eğitimine değinilen çok sayıda çalışma mevcut değildir.
Bu araştırmanın amacı kitleleri peşinden sürüklemeyi başarmış olan Caz müziğin kökenin ne
kadar eskiye dayandığını, bu müzik türünün tarih içerisinde nasıl şekillendiğini ve Türkiye’de
Caz eğitiminin hangi yollarla verildiğini ortaya koymaktır. Nitel araştırma yönteminden
yararlanılan bu araştırmada verilerin toplanması aşamasında literatür taramasından
yararlanılmıştır. Toplanan veriler betimsel analiz yöntemiyle çözümlenerek raporlaştırılmıştır.
Araştırma neticesinde Caz müziğin kökeninin Afrika’dan Amerika’ya götürülen kölelere
dayandığı, Work Song, Field Holler, Spirituel, Gospel, Blues, Ragtime, Swing, Bebop, Cool,
Hard Bop, Free Jazz, Rock gibi çeşitli form ve türlere sahip olduğu ve bu müzik türünün
gelişimine Luis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane,
Duke Ellington gibi müzisyenlerin katkıları olduğu sonuçlarına ulaşılmıştır. Ayrıca
Türkiye’de halen Caz eğitimi veren kurumların sayısının oldukça az olduğu tespit edilmiştir.
