CARBOHYDRATE COUNTING
It tells you how many points, in mg/dL, your blood sugar will drop for each
WHAT IS AN INSULIN 1 unit of insulin that you take.
SENSITIVITY FACTOR (ISF)? It is also sometimes called a “correction factor.” You need to know this
number to correct a blood sugar level that’s too high.
ISF EXAMPLE: Your ISF is 1:25 for blood sugars over 150
Give yourself 1 extra unit of insulin for every 25 points that your blood sugar is above 150
1. Create a table for easy measuring. Start with 150 and add 25 to be your first range.
Indicates how many units of insulin you will need to inject for the amount of
WHAT IS A CARBOHYDRATE grams of carbohydrates you are about to eat. Allows for a flexible eating
RATIO (CR)? regimen. It is always patient specific, and dependent on their total daily dose
of insulin.
Your CR is 1:10. So you will give yourself 1 unit of insulin for every 10 grams (g) of
CR EXAMPLE:
carbohydrates in the meal (or snack) you are about to eat.
1. Look at the carbohydrates section on the nutrition label to determine the grams of
carbs you will consume in 1 serving.
Serving size is 7 crackers, with 23 grams of carbohydrates in total.
2. Divide the number of grams of carbohydrates in the serving by 10 (your CR 1:10)
23 divided by 10 = 2.3 units of insulin to cover the crackers you are going to eat
3. If you do not get a whole number, round up to the nearest whole number if greater
than .5. If less than .5, round the amount of units you will give down.
So 2.3 units = 2 units
Tercer rango: 200+ 25 = 225 Rango: 201-225 3 unidades 3.
