After a semester of taking the Advance College Writing course, I was able to organize

and focus onto addressing the problem of the inadequate health education by stating the

importance of making a change, to benefit the physical well-being of the students, and the

society as a whole. Through the researches required by the writings, I have done some ethical

research, to make a persuasive argument objectively on the topic of improper health education

that students are receiving in the current educational system. More importantly, writing formally

and informally, for different audiences and purposes was another achievement that was made

throughout the course, in the pieces of reading responses and class activities.

The portfolio covers the refutation of the argument that social media should be used to

promote health education, due to its ability to spread quickly. Researches show that, although,

social media is accessible to everybody, anywhere in the globe, but it has issues with the

accuracy of the contents. Social media are known to be for entertainment, and not for educational

purposes; therefore, using social media as a means to promote health education is nearly

impossible.

In addition to refutation piece of writing, I have also included a reading response

regarding to the articles of Cheryl J. Harris and Devon W. Carbado called, “Loot or Find: Fact of

Frame” and “Theories and Constructs of Race” by Linda Holtzman and Leon Sharpe. The piece

is important because it discusses the problem of discrimination during the hurricane Katrina that

crashed into New Orleans. It further explores that the terminologies that the authors use, such as

“loot” or “find,” could have a major influence the audiences’ perceptions. The result of

criminalizes or victimizes a person under the same circumstance reflects on the author’s biased

opinion and perception in the article itself.

The portfolio also contains a piece of peer-review of a classmate’s essay, that show by

the ability of collaboration to improve my own and others’ writing skills. Through the experience

of peer-reviewing, it was not only helping a classmate, but it was a reflective moment for my

own piece of writing. I realized the mistakes that I have made in my own essay, and therefore,

was able to improve the essay.
