Envelope analysis
› Envelope analysis is a special kind of representation in the frequency range.
› It is very well suited for identifying impacts in the machine
› - Gear wheel damage
› - Bearing damage
› - Excessive bearing clearance
› Other analysis methods generally fail to cope with this.
› Impacts generate a broad frequency spectrum.

› Since the energy of the impact is spread over a wide frequency range, the spectral power
density is very low.

› The effects of the impact in the frequency range that is of interest for impact excitation are
so weak that they are masked by other vibrations such as out of-balance vibrations in the
spectrum from the FFT, and therefore cannot bedentified.
› Envelope analysis exploits the fact that other causes of vibration such as out-ofbalance
› vibrations are not represented in the higher frequency range. This means that
› here the frequency components of impacts are not masked.
› This spectrum now shows only the impact consequence frequency f and not other
› signals such as out-of-balance vibrations.
