Personal Outer Space

2nd graders from room 20 explored the process of imagining their

very own universes in art class for K-5 student teacher Miss Karpinski
and Dr. Armstrong. Children combined writing and art-making to bring
an entirely new reality to life. Planets were first drawn out on large sheets
of paper, with notations with names, characteristics, inhabitants, and
quality of life surrounding the sketch. Students constructed bases, using
their preliminary drawings for reference, and applied papier-mâché &
paint in a similar fashion to what they originally imagined. During the
process, challenges were met and ideas were adapted, all while children
pushed their ideas further with each class session, diving deeper into
what life on their planet is like.
