Topic: Cooperative Learning with Computer

Let’s define first what cooperative learning is. Cooperative learning

is learning by small group of students who work together in a common learning
task. It is also called group learning. It is said to be group learning because the
learning is taking place within the group itself. We all know that some school face
the fact that each classroom, especially in public schools, is not equipped with
appropriate numbers of computers. Sometimes the ratio of computers to students
is one is to five. With this, the creative side of the teacher must take place. He/she
will take this opportunity to have a cooperative learning among students by
grouping them so that it is not hard for them to learn even if the school is not fully
equipped with computers. There are five elements needed to have cooperative
learning; a common goal, interdependence, interaction, individual accountability
and social skills. A common goals needed for a successful cooperative learning
because it is hard to have cooperation in a group if different goals are being
implemented or being done. It is hard to have a learning in a group if the goal is
not being achieved. Interdependence is on how a group depend on one another.
They depend on each other in a way the all of them has a say on what is being
done without affecting their common goal. Interaction in other hand may link to
interdependence, interaction is needed to have the conversation running and doing
the mutual action that is needed to achieve the goal. Individual accountability is
the act of being accountable in anything you have done in the work. Everyone in
the group is accountable of the failures and achievements of one another. Social
skills is needed in cooperative learning because you cannot interact with the group
if you are lack of social skills. Miscommunication may take place. These five
elements are needed to achieve the goals of the group and that is learning. But
why we need cooperative learning? What are the advantages of it for us to use it?
Cooperative learning encourages active learning while motivating the students.
Since it is learning within the group, the students collaborate ideas and more active
in the group discussion. Through this they are more motivated to learn and
participate. Cooperative learning improves the teachers’ effectiveness in a way
that the students may give them the product that they achieve. If the students
achieve the goal the teacher as a facilitator is effective because the class achieve
the objective he/she said. It also enhances personal in social development of the
students, self-esteem and social relations between racially and culturally different
students.
