Essay #4

In william Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies there are many different symbols that

represent different Meanings:some representing good and some representing evil. According to

dictionary.com. Symbolism means “the practice of representing things by symbols, or of

investing things with a symbolic meaning or character “. This essay will discuss the two objects

and symbols that will be explained . These two objects will be Fire And ,The conch. This essay

will be explaining why these objects are symbolic and how in the end of the chapters these

objects change. This essay will also be talking how it might help them or not help them survive

the island and survive jacks group. finally this essay will explain how they will change and be a

much different thing from what they were.

One symbol that will be explained about is gonna be the fire. The fire was a symbol of

hope and Rescue. It was that because they started the fire in first place was for hope that they

will get rescue. “ There’s another thing. We can help them to find us. If a ship comes near the

island they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain .We must make a

fire “ (Golding 38). On this quote Ralph was telling them that if we want to get rescued we must

make a fire, symbolizing hope and rescue. He was telling and giving the group to survive and to

keep the fire going up. He was giving them hope and a reason to survive the island that one day

they will get rescued. In the end of the book jack tries killing ralph by burning the whole island

up. The one reason that the groups gets rescued is that when jack starts the fire the military
rescue them because they saw the whole island on fire and they saw the smoke so they get

rescued.

Another symbol This essay will be talking about is gonna be the conch. The conch

symbolizes Power, Law, and order . The main reason they started using the conch was that when

they have something important to say they will blow the conch. When ralph ordered to start the

fire in chapter 2 page 38 he blew the conch and started talking . “By the time ralph finished

blowing the conch the platform was crowded” (Golding 32). This means that when the conch

was blown everyone came and started listening to whoever was talking and holding the conch.

Only the person that was holding the conch got to talk.”I’ll give the conch to the next person to

speak. He will hold the conch when he will be speaking and he won’t be interrupted by anyone”

(Golding 33) This quote explains that the person that will be speaking can’t get interrupted by

anyone and he will be the only one speaking because he's holding the conch.

In William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies the Author talks and mentions symbolism

throughout the whole novel. This essay talks about is that the different types of symbolism like

the one this essay talks about were fire and the conch the fire talks about hope and rescue. The

fire builds hope for the group of survivals and in the end of the novel it saves and rescues ralph

and the group because the people see the island on fire. The second symbol this essay talked

about was The conch which was a big shell that when you blow it it makes a sound like a
whistle. The conch represented law, and order When the conch was blown everyone in the island

gathered together and started listening to whoever was talking and listened to them. That’s what

this essay talks about and its what William Golding’s Novel Lord of the Flies symbolism meant

and represented .
