ASSIGNMENT # 1

Deadline: Friday, May 18th, 2018 (During the Class)

Problem # 1
The following figure shows typical longitudinal and cross-sectional views of simply supported
rectangular reinforced concrete beams with the properties indicated below:

750 mm

Beam No. Width Depth Main Rft. Compressive Strength Yield Strength
b (mm) d (mm) As (mm2) fc’ (MPa) fy (MPa)
B1 300 700 1800 (6 - 20M) 35 400
B2 200 700 1800 (6 - 20M) 35 400
B3 300 550 1800 (6 - 20M) 35 400
B4 300 700 1500 (5 - 20M) 35 400
B5 300 700 1800 (6 - 20M) 26 400
B6 300 700 1800 (6 - 20M) 35 300

It is required to:
(a) Calculate the moment of resistance (Mr) for each of the given beam sections according to
CSA A23.3-04 procedure.

(b) What is the influence of each of the following changes on the moment of resistance (Mr)?
(Hint: Calculate the percent change for each case).
 Decreasing the beam width from 300 mm to 200 mm.
 Decreasing the effective depth from 700 mm to 550 mm.
 Decreasing the main steel reinforcement from 1800 mm 2 to 1500 mm2.
 Decreasing the concrete compressive strength from 35 MPa to 26 MPa.
 Decreasing the steel yield strength from 400 MPa to 300 MPa.

(c) Based on the aforementioned results, what are the most and least effective ways of changing
the moment of resistance (Mr)?

Problem # 2

The following figure illustrates the cross-sectional view of a

20M
reinforced concrete beam-column element having a cross-
sectional dimensions of 300 mm × 300 mm and reinforced
300
by 4-20M steel bars. The materials used in construction are
normal weight concrete with a compressive strength (fc') of
25 MPa and steel bars with a yield strength (fy) of 400 MPa. 300

Consider the following:

 Assume that the axial load (P) acts through the geometric centroid of the cross section, and take
moments about that axis.
 Use a Todeschini stress-block in your calculations with compression strains up to 0.008, or to the
point where the moment-curvature (M-φ) curve reaches a maximum and starts to drop.
 Assume the steel is an elastic-perfectly plastic material (i.e. bilinear stress-strain relationship).
 fc’’ = 0.9 fc’.
 Clear concrete cover = 35 mm.

It is required to:

(a) Plot the nominal moment-curvature (M-φ) diagram for the shown cross section at an axial
load (P) of zero (neglect the resistance factors).

(b) Plot the nominal moment-curvature (M-φ) diagram for the shown cross section at an axial
load (P) of 0.50 fc’ b h (neglect the resistance factors).

(c) For each load condition, comment on the influence of the axial load level on both ductility
and extreme fiber strain at the maximum applied moment.

(d) Repeat part (a) with factored material strengths, specifically cfc’ and sfy, where c = 0.65
and s = 0.85.

(e) Comment on the effect of the resistance factors on the following:

 Ultimate flexural capacity.
 Secant stiffness of the section before yielding.
 Ductility of the response.
