Reactions of Gp. 2 elements with Acid

i. Describe the reaction between Mg and dil. HCl

ii. Write the equation for this reaction.

iii. How does the reactivity towards dil. HCl vary as you go down the group?

iv. The reaction between Mg and dil H2SO4 looks exactly the same as the one between Mg and dil.
HCl. However, the rest of the group from Ca down to Ba behave differently. Explain why ?

v. The formation of a metal ion from a metal is an example of oxidation, with dil. HCl and dil H2SO4,
the electrons are given to hydrogen ions to reduce them to hydrogen gas. However, with HNO3 ,
the electrons can also be used to reduce the nitrate ions. What happens depends on the
concentration of the HNO3.
a) Give the formulae of two gases which can be formed by reducing nitrate ions.

b) What will be the major gaseous product if you react Mg with very dil. HNO3 ?

c) What is the major gaseous product if you react Mg with moderately concentrated HNO3 ?

d) What will it be if we react Mg with CONC. HNO3 ?

e) Write the equation for reaction in either c or d ?
