Unit 4 Day 1
The article I chose was “South Korean Women Escape the Corset and Reject their Country’s
Beauty Ideals,” This went over the beauty standards women face and how women in Korea
chose to defy these standards by shaving their heads, wearing unisex clothing, or not wearing
makeup. For the philosophical April, I chose not to wear makeup. I had been insecure about my
skin for the longest time, and even after I got the right treatment to make it better, I still wore
makeup. It was part of my morning routine, a habit I had developed over the years. It morphed
into something I did out of insecurity to something I did for fun or because it made me feel more
confident. However, I did the challenge because I wanted to prove to myself that I didn’t need
makeup in my life. I’m so glad I did. Not only does my skin look even better because it got the
chance to breathe, but I feel as confident without on as I do with it on. My mornings go much
smoother, and I don’t feel like I’m pleasing anyone. The best part is that I still feel just like
myself. In the article, a women that participated in the challenge said, "Dear sisters and friends, I
wish we could become humans that exist as we are, and love and be loved as we are. You are
you, I am me, we are us, without the makeup, without the corset. Just a human. I love you,
always, as you are." I love this because women have been defined by their beauty for song long
it’s about time we’re looked at for our character and intelligence rather than the superficial
things. In the introduction of Identity, Privilege, and Inequalities, a quote said, “I want to be seen
as attractive and beautiful and sexy like everyone else, but I think that in my artwork, for me it’s
trying to find some comfort with being everything a human can be.” This message was echoed
through “Girl” as well because it’s so important. We shouldn’t have to abide by the standards
that society seems to believe is the norm. If women should dress, act, and speak in ways that
make them feel as human, and themselves as possible.
