1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 What is critical path method (CPM)?

The critical path method (CPM) is a step-by-step project management technique for process
planning that defines critical and non-critical tasks with the goal of preventing time-frame
problems and process bottlenecks. The CPM is in a perfect world fit to ventures comprising of
various exercises that connect in a confusing way. In applying the CPM, there are a few stages
that can be shortened as pursues characterize the required assignments and put them down in an
arranged (sequenced) list, make a flowchart or other graph demonstrating each task in connection
to the others, recognize the basic and non-basic connections (ways) among undertakings. Next,
decide the normal fulfillment or execution time for each undertaking, find or devise options
(reinforcements) for the most basic ways. CPM assumes that project activity times can be
estimated accurately and that they do not vary. Program evaluation and review technique (PERT)
is a specific type of CPM that adopts mathematical approach to deciding the ideal quantities of
days a task will take a total. CPM is used to determine the critical path (CP). CP exercises in a
venture is arrangements of exercises that structure the longest chain as far as their opportunity to
finish. On the off chance that any of the exercises in the CP is deferred, at that point the whole
venture is postponed. The CPM computes when the exercises must begin and end, together with
whether the movement's is a piece of the CP.

1.2 The three main purpose of CPM

The main idea is to know how long a project will take and the activities which could result in
delaying the project if they are delayed. The manager must make a point to have all the critical
and non-critical data about the task in sight and this technique gives data on every one of them
by taking into consideration the following components:

1
1. To calculate the projects finish date.

2. To identify to what extent each activity in the schedule can slip (float) without delaying
the project.

3. To identify the activities with the highest risk that cannot slip without changing the
project finish date

1.3 What is project planning?

A discipline for stating how to complete a project within a certain timeframe. There are not many
devices that typically been utilized in undertaking arranging like the Gantt chart and Program
Evaluation Review Technique (PERT) chart.

2
Figure 2 : Example of Program Evaluation Review Technique (PERT) chart.

1.4 Role of project planning:

a. Providing for effective communication between various sections involved in the project.

b. Developing a project milestones schedule that also includes:

 Project start date

 Project end date
 Other major milestones

c. Generating periods report.

d. Planning of work within project budget by organizing material, equipment and people.

e. Planning for project risks such as ensuring adequate material resources and labor
resources requirement.

f. Planning for adequate reporting of project status to management for effective control
and evaluation of project process.

g. Program Evaluation Review Technique (PERT) chart.

2.0 DISCUSSION OF THE SSSUE
2.1 Critical Path Method (CPM)
CPM is depending on the supposition that venture action time can be evaluated precisely and
does not have any changes. It is used to decide the basic way (CP) of movement in a task.
Critical Path (CP) is an arrangement of movement that structure the longest chain the term of
their opportunity to finish.

2.2 CPM Formulae:

Ef = Es + activity time
Es = Ef - activity time
Lf = smallest Ls of immediate successor (or, for last node, the highest Ef of last node)
Ls = Lf - activity time
Slack = Lf - Ef
Es= highest Ef predecessor
Dummy, zero time (applicable when we need to start an activity but must wait until two
previous activities are completed, so the link between the two previous activities is
denoted by broken lines)

2.3 CPM is an effective and powerful method of assessing:

What tasks must be carried out
Where parallel activities can be performed
The shortest time in which you can complete a project
Resources needed to execute a project
The sequence of activities, scheduling and timings involved
Task priorities
The most efficient way of shortening time on urgent projects.

4
An effective Critical Path Analysis can make the difference between success and failure on
complex projects. It can be very useful for measuring the importance of problems faced during
the implementation of the plan. In the other hand, PERT is a variation of Basic Way Examination
that takes a progressively doubtful perspective on the time expected to finish each extend
organize.

4.0 CONCLUSION

The Critical Path Method is an important tool for managing your project's schedule. It's not
very difficult to determine key elements. However, once the project has more than a few
activities, critical path scheduling can become tedious. Project planning can use POLC for
planning, organizing, lead and control. As a project manager in a shipyard, that person need to
identify the right path or the right thing that need to be done first and how to handle the project
efficiently without any delay.
