Researchers documented plant families in Baluno Pasonanca and Dinagat Islands, Philippines. They identified a new species of Begonia and documented a vulnerable species of Mussaenda through morphological analysis and comparison to known species. While the researchers proposed a new Begonia species based on morphology, using molecular data could have strengthened the proposal by supporting the morphological analysis.

The study is in line with the goal of systematics in unveiling the natural world
through observation and comparison. Specifically, the researchers documented the
family Rubiaceae in Baluno Pasonanca and Dinagat Islands; this lead them in identifying a new species of Begonia and document a vulnerable species of Mussaenda. Moreover, the study can be related to systematics through the utilized methods in the study namely, sample collection of plants, preservation of samples with the utilization of preservation techniques (herbarium sheets), and the morphological analysis through comparison with identified and verified species. The inference of the researchers in proposing a new species was based on the morphological relationships of Begonia species. On the other hand, the researchers could have utilized molecular data to support their proposition; the use of molecular data to support or even verify morphological data analysis is a method in systematics that allows inference that is supported more strongly compared to the usage of morphological data alone.
