May 2019 Election

May 13, 2019 was expected to be a busy and stressful day for all Filipinos. It was the
regular midterm elections wherein people cast their votes for their chosen local officials,
House Representatives, and senators.

Many voters waited early in the morning outside their polling precincts in order to avoid
the long line of voters. The voting precincts were opened at 6:00 am. Senior citizens
and pregnant women were given priority in the line. Other voters patiently waited for
their turn to vote. Umbrella, fan, cap, towel and plastic bottle were among the starter
pack that every voter brought with them. The heat of the sun and the waiting time did
not hinder the voters to exercise their right.

However, as with the past elections, this year’s election was filled with complaints and
issues. Various technical issues regarding the vote counting machines (VCM),
malfunctioning of the SD cards, and paper jams had caused delay. Also, many Filipinos
cast doubt as to the credibiity of the results due to these transmission delays and
technical glitches. Nevertheless, the winners of the midterm elections will take office on
June 30, 2019.
