ENDOCARDITIS

DEFINITION:
y Endocarditis is inflammation of the inside lining of the heart
chambers and heart valves (endocardium).
CAUSES, INCIDENCE, AND RISK FACTORS
y Endocarditis can involve the heart muscle, heart valves, or
lining of the heart. Most people who develop endocarditis
have a:
y Birth defect of the heart
y Damaged or abnormal heart valve
y History of endocarditis
y New heart valve after surgery
SYMPTOMS:
Fever, chills, and sweating
y Small areas of bleeding under the nails (splinter
hemorrhages)
y Red, painless skin spots on the palms and soles (Janeway
lesions)
y Red, painful nodes in the pads of the fingers and toes (Osler's
nodes)
y Shortness of breath with activity
y Swelling of feet, legs, abdomen
y LAB INVESTIGATIONS:
y blood culture
y complete blood count

y c-reactive protein
y Echocardiogram

y TREATMENT:
y Antibiotic treatments that are started in the hospital will
need to be continued at home.
y Surgery to replace the heart valve is usually needed when:
