Procrastination

“Procrastination the action of the delaying or postponing something” we can all admit we

have all procrastinated at one point procrastination is something deadly for a college student and

it could potentially hurt the students grade and or outcome in the class.I believe if students were

more disciplined and took the time to balance their time wisely or ask for help they could have

higher success rates among students and student grades. Some people procrastinate so much that

when they feel overwhelmed they give up and that's not we anybody wants so that's why i

believe we should teach students of all ages how to not procrastinate

People who procrastinate usually tend to regret their actions but never learn from them

and that's because most people who do procrastinate give up so their never able to succeed. And

that's not ok at all colleges pay for student services and they do their best to have students show

up they even offer food which they really shouldn't have to because at the end of the day it's your

education and you should always make that your priority. Most students believe that theyll get it

done themselves and then never do either because they forgot a friend called or work etc. But

these students don't realize is that they are always offered help all they have to do is take

advantage of it and that's why i feel that students should be a little more disciplined because they

would take initiative to put there most important priority first instead of last. These colleges

invest a lot of money into tutors who will help you improve in your class it doesn't matter what
Diaz 2
class it is i'm sure the school would and will do its best to find a tutor suitable to you. I am one of

those students that does not take advantage of the school resources it has to offer even though i

do realize i am doing poorly in the school but i make excuses that i'm either too busy or i can do

it on my own but i really shouldn't have that mindset because it a really bad one and it affects my

grade and my mental status when i start to freak out about due dates homework etc. I solution to

being a little more disciplined could be showing you reality for example you could search up like

your dream life on how much would it cost to do the things you would like to do yearly and

monthly and then see the total amount of money you'll need and the type of job you'd need to

live that life status but if your doing poorly in your school i dont think youll get that far so doing

a life check on yourself could potentially wake you up and make you realize that you should get

things done asap. I know that i want to make enough money to buy my family whatever they

desire because i come from a family who does not make enough money and i see my family

struggling to make money not all the time but when they do they are stressed about it and that's

probably because they never finished college or were not given the option to go luckily i am

fortunate to go to college but i am wasting my chance that's why i feel strongly that students

should check themselves and hopefully that will make them improve.

I think that students should know how to balance their time as well because knowing how

much time to invest in each class doing homework is very important although all your classes are

important but if your spending to much time on one subject your going to have less time on the

other subjects even though your going to be passing math you might not be doing so well in the

other classes do to the lack of time invested in it and that could potentially lead to you being

stressed and not knowing what to complete or do first. But students from other colleges have
Diaz 3
their whole day planned out and how much free time the have and how much time is invested to

each class and this is why i believe they are successful because lets say they didn't finish one of

their assignments and they have to move on to their next subject so they wont fall behind in any

other classes they gave themselves enough free time that they could potentially get their job done

and since they already finished their other subjects they won't have to stress about finishes

anything for that day.

Why do people procrastinate well there are many factors to busy not that important i'll do

it later but in all honesty some people are just lazy but this is John Perry's theory to why people

procrastinate “ Procrastinators seldom do absolutely nothing; they do marginally useful things,

such as gardening or sharpening pencils or making a diagram of how they will reorganize their

files when they find the time. Why does the procrastinator do these things? Because

accomplishing these tasks is a way of not doing something more important.” -“ How to

Procrastinate and Still Get Things Done.” and i really like this quote because it's honestly so real

so procrastination is like a disease if it were lethal like you know you have it but you cant or

wont do nothing about it,basically he's saying although you're avoiding to do your most

important task your still getting other stuff done just that their not of high priority why I don't

know maybe it's a mental dilemma but he's showing us that if your going to procrastinate at least

be good at it. “To make structured procrastination work for you, begin by establishing a

hierarchy of the tasks you have to do, in order of importance from the most urgent to the least

important. Even though the most-important tasks are on top, you have worthwhile tasks to

perform lower on the list. Doing those tasks becomes a way of not doing the things higher on the

list. With this sort of appropriate task structure, you can become a useful citizen. Indeed, the
Diaz 4
procrastinator can even acquire, as I have, a reputation for getting a lot done.”-“ How to

Procrastinate and Still Get Things Done.” So as we can see procrastination does not have to be a

bad thing because your getting all these mini assignments done even though they could have

could been completed at any other time your still getting things turned in with no stress whats so

ever.

“Researchers and practitioners have long regarded procrastination as a self-handicapping

and dysfunctional behavior. In the present study, the authors proposed that not all procrastination

behaviors either are harmful or lead to negative consequences.”-“Rethinking Procrastination:” i

don't agree with the authors that they say there are no negative or positive effects of

procrastination it all depends on the person mind if their willing to admit they are stalling and get

stuff done or ignore their properties either way i do agree that procrastination does not benefit

you even if you do use it to your benefit you have to smart about it and not everybody's situation

is the same some people have kids and school and they cant afford to procrastinate but still do

what they could do to change these habits is to 1st stop what they currently do and rethink their

life style and how much time is put into everything and to be more strict on yourself like if you

were trying to lose weight your not going to lose weight if you keep eating bad same goes for

procrastination your never going to move up in the world when by the time you finish one task

you've have 2 more your literally just crippling yourself academically and your going to stress

yourself out and have more problems.

In conclusion if these were habits college students would try to practice and not

procrastinate we could all have a smoother time in or goal of pursuing a higher education and or

dream life all it takes is a little bit of discipline and good time management skills so you could be
Diaz 5
the best person you can be and get the most output of yourself because time is something we

don't want to waste because time is something we don't know how much we have of so its best to

use your time wisely and do not waste your own time or others if you need help seek help

colleges throw a lot of money so that students can thrive and be a better person so do your best

and try to be a better you at the end of the day everyday.
