First debate

Lincoln ● Lincoln challenge Douglas in a series of debates on

slavery and territories.
● They both didn’t want slavery in there territories but
disagree on how to keep it out.
● Lincoln believed that slavery was immoral and
Douglas believed in popular sovereignty.
● People wouldn't give up slavery unless Congress
abolished slavery with a constitutional amendment

Second debate

● The Dred Scott law didn’t allow people to vote to


exclude slavery from there state.
● Douglas went around the Dred Scott and said to just
elect a representative who wouldn’t enforce slavery.
● Douglas won senate, Lincoln’s attack’s on the “vast
moral evil” of slavery drew national attention. Mainly
the north.

that he wouldn’t abolish slavery

Secession ● Mississippi left, followed by Florida,
Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas.
● Secession states met in Montgomery,
Alabama and formed the Confederate States
● They protected and recognized slavery in
new territories.
● They elected Jefferson Davis as President
● People wondered if they north would allow
the south to leave without a fight.
