There are no absolute records of the origin of the glass. It is thought that it arose
around 7000 years before Christ, when Navigators discovered that by making bonfires on the
beach, the sand and the limestone (shells) combined at high temperatures formed glass.
In the beginning glassmaking was slow and costly, it was luxury and few people could
afford it. The discovery of a new technique of “glass blowing” made glass production easier,
faster and cheaper and glass, for the first time, became available to everyone.
Techniques of glass blowing have changed very little over the centuries.
Mechanical technology for mass production began on the Industrial Revolution with an
automatic bottle-blowing machine (1903).
Currently, the material is one of the most widely used on the planet.
For example: bottles, cups, windows, doors, windscreen, screens, glasses, plates,
decorations, cameras and much more.
The glass has several advantages between them being the only 100% recyclable
material, which reduces (in part) the environmental impact.
