SUMMARY
An industrial visit for students of 3rd year, B.E civil opting the
Subject-Advance Concrete Equipment took place on this 21st Feb-
ruary 2019, from 11:00am to 1:30pm to the Kasarvadavali Metro
Station. For this visit we were accompanied by Prof. Shubhra
Dhamande. The purpose of this visit was to educate the students
about the equipment’s of latest technology that are being used for
the construction of the Mumbai Metro. This visit provided the stu-
dents a wonderful opportunity to get to know about the heavy con-
struction equipment that are not usually used on a construction
site.
INTRODUCTION
Line 4 of the Mumbai Metro, currently under early stages of con-
struction, is part of the metro system for the city of Mumbai, India
and is being developed by MMRDA and a consortium of in-
ternational companies. The 32.32 km (20.08 mi) line is planned to
be fully elevated, and is expected to consist of 32 stations
from Wadala (Mumbai)to Kasarvadavali (Ghodbunder
road, Thane) via Ghatkopar, Mulund and Teen Hath Naka, a popu-
lar traffic crossing in Thane. It is estimated to cost of ₹14,549
crores. It is an elevated rapid transit system. It is expected to be
completed by the year 2022.
DESCRIPTION

The Kasarvadavali Metro Station is in the initial phase of

construction. The preliminary activities such as survey, bar-
ricading work, Soil investigation, utility identification, etc.
are started. Following are the equipment’s used for the
above activities.

✦The construction process starts with the demolition of the

original structures that are in place with the alignment
and for this we use the Backhoe Loader.

• Backhoe Loader :
An important engineering machine which comprises of a
small backhoe in the rear end, a tractor, front shovel and re-
placeable bucket, can duplicate the work of a bulldozer,
front end loader and excavator. The backhoe loader also has
the advantage of being driven directly to the different job
areas that allows backhoe loaders to do multiple jobs like
Light demolition; Transportation of light building material;
Digging holes; Paving roads; Breaking asphalt; Small urban
engineering projects.
✦After the demolition all the material left behind needs to
be disposed off. For this purpose, we use the Dump
Truck.
• Dump Truck
A typical dump truck is equipped with an open-box bed,
which is hinged at the rear and equipped with hydraulic
rams to lift the front, allowing the material in the bed to be
deposited on the ground behind the truck at the site of de-
livery. All the excavated debris is then loaded into the dump
truck taken to the dumping site which is out of the city pe-
riphery. It is also used for transporting other goods from
one place to another.
✦After clearing the site, we need to conduct site investiga-
tion. We need to understand the soil strata; we need to
map the utility lines for this we need a drilling rig.

• Hydraulic Drilling Rig:

The rig primarily uses hydraulic power and is mobile.
Auger drill bit is used. The drilling is done with
a helical screw which is driven into the ground with rota-
tion; the earth is lifted up the borehole by the blade of the
screw. Small augers can be mounted on the back of a utility
truck, with large augers used for sinking piles for bridge
foundations. It is cheap and fast.
✦As the soil investigation are complete we need to start
laying the foundations, we have limited amount of space
and limited time. So the in-situ construction is not feasi-
ble and hence we use pre-cast concrete segments that are
made in the yards and transported to the site. This is work
is done by Trailers.

• Trailers:

A trailer is an unpowered vehicle towed by a powered ve-

hicle. A trailers is used for transporting the pre-cast con-
crete piles from the yard to the site. These were also used
for transporting barricades, formwork, etc.

✦After the pre-cast piles are transported to site, the drilling

rigs are used to make a bore hole and the piles are placed
into the bore holes with the help of Truck mounted
cranes.
• Truck Mounted Cranes:
Crane mounted on a truck carrier provides the mobility for
this type of crane. These cranes are able to travel on high-
ways, eliminating the need for special equipment to trans-
port the crane. When working on the site, outriggers are ex-
tended horizontally from the chassis then vertically to level
and stabilize the crane while stationary and hoisting. Truck
cranes range in lifting capacity from about 12900 kg to
13155 kg. This cranes are used to place the pile in the bored
holes, they are used to place formwork, etc.
!

✦The piles are driven into the ground using a piling rig, it
uses impact hammer having a hydraulic system.

• Pile Driving Rigs:

A piling rig is a construction machine for piling in founda-

tion engineering. It is widely used cast-in-place piles, di-
aphragm walls, foundation reinforcement and other founda-
tion projects. Its rated power of engine is around 108–
450 kW, output torque 60–400 kN•m, maximum pile diam-
eter 1.5–4 m, maximum pile depth 60–90 m. It generally
applies hydraulic crawler chassis, automatic lift box-type
mast, telescopic drill pipe, auto vertical adjustor, depth in-
dicator, etc. Its operation applies hydraulic pilot control,
load sensor, thus is easy to control. The piles are driven into
the ground using impact hammer.
✦The next step is to install sheet piles and excavate the
area around the concrete piles so as to construct pile caps
and for this we require a concrete mixer.

• Concrete Mixer:
A concrete mixer is a device that homogeneously com-
bines cement, aggregate such as sand or gravel,
and water to form concrete. A typical concrete mixer uses a
revolving drum to mix the components. For smaller volume
works, portable concrete mixers are often used so that the
concrete can be made at the construction site, giving the
workers ample time to use the concrete before it hardens.
✦After the piles are formed, piers are constructed using ad-
vance climbing system formwork and then concrete
crosshairs are placed using cranes. Then we use Gantry
crane for the launching of segments of pre-cast concrete.

• Gantry Crane:
It a special-purpose mobile gantry crane used
in bridge construction. It is used to install precast box gird-
ers in highway and high-speed rail bridge construction
projects. The SLJ908 is a machine that can carry, lift, and
place sections of track, connecting pillars by heavy stone
blocks. After pillars are in place and construction has been
carried out up to a certain pillar, the machine advances over
the gap to the next pillar and drops another block of track
into place, spanning the gap. The machine then backs up to
collect another block, moves forward, and repeats the
process.

✦The t-beam is launched using a crane and the final step is

the construction of the station which again uses all of the
above mentioned equipment.

Conclusion

The industrial visit was successfully completed by the stu-

dents. It proved to be a very informative and enlightening
as students got the firsthand experience of an actual con-
struction site equipment’s.
