The Problem And It’s Background

INTRODUCTION

Internet plays a big role in our lives. However, internet makes studying more easy and

convenient for most of the students of the modern times. As the time passes, internet evolves and

people, tends to discover and learn new things. Because of this, students who uses internet also

increases, also new websites appear for different purposes and uses. But, not all of these are safe.

Some of these are “toxic” or harmful for our mental health.

The Grade 11 GAS students of Baliuag University are the main participants of the

research about what is the role of the internet in the modern students. The Baliuag University

Annex 3 is located at Gil Carlos Street, Baliuag, Bulacan. The total population of the GAS

students was exactly 190. The Grade 11 GAS students at Baliuag University are qualified to be

the respondents of this research because they use internet more often than the other students.

Internet applications respond to students and other people questions in real time. Students

are seeing Google as a new Teacher and the Internet as a school. That’s why it is important for

teachers to use information technology in education. The Internet has been crucial in the

evolution of our education system in various ways. Teachers can use the internet as a modern

tool for education. Education department should provide the infrastructure that teachers and

student can use to get benefits of technology in education

Also, the internet provides an environment in which millions of people participate and

engage in the creation and exchange of information. Accordingly, internet access in schools has

increased greatly over the last 20 years. The use of the internet is one of the major factors
affecting the academic performance and social life of university students. The number of hours

spent on using the internet can sometimes affects their grades if it’s not on the right use.

At this time, some of the students, teenagers who uses internet in their studies undergo the

effects of it in their daily lives. The modern students not only use internet in their studies but also

in social medias and online games that affects their everyday routine and studies. So, this

research is conducted to know the effects of internet in the student’s daily life and studies.

People can easily identify the impact of internet in the GAS student’s life and

performance in school through this research. They can also gather different causes of the

increasing use of internet through the help of this research.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study will be significant to the following:

To the students. They will be informed that the role of the internet to the modern

students will help them to improve their knowledge and skills in academic purposes. This study

will help those students who are in need of background knowledge about a certain topic and to

check if their gathered information is reliable.

To the coordinators. They can use internet also for their career growth. Also they can

easily access in the internet to clarify some information that they needed. This is a big advantage

for them to help them manage time more efficiently.

To the teachers. Internet is really helpful to the teachers because internet helps them in

the lessons they will need to learn to teach students efficiently. They can also use internet to
clarify the information they gather for teaching. In the help of the internet, they can save more

time because they don’t need to scan hard copies documents to find the data that they needed.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Many researchers conduct studies about how internet affects the lives of people,

especially the academic performance of the students in school. They want to know about the

advantages and disadvantages of using it as a guide or tool in doing school works, if it is really

helpful or not. The researcher wants to give information to people for them to know the different

positive and negative effects of the internet in their life. Here are some articles about the role of

the internet to the modern students.

Does the More Internet Usage Provides Good Grades

It is a descriptive, causal, and longitudinal research design. It is also a study that assess

the respondents by locating and analyzing how the usage of internet affects the students and if it

is helpful or not. They connect it to the academic performance of the student to know well the

impact of internet to their studies.

In these years, internet plays a big role not only in our life but also in the academic

performance of students who uses it often. Internet can be a help or not to the student’s studies

because of its positive and negative effects. In this study, the students should know their

limitations in using the internet to prevent harms to the student’s health and academic activities.

Studies suggest that internet provides so much information and knowledge that benefits the

students and teachers but also can harm them and leads to obsession.

The Use of Internet For Academic Purposes

 It is a descriptive and inferential statistical method research design. In this study data

were gathered by questionnaire and also experiences to examined and to identify the effects of

internet to the participants.

In these years, students used the internet for convenience. You can gather the

informations by the use of the internet in just click away, you can finish your projects and

assignments in just a few minutes. In further studies, it could be a good idea to familiarize

students with the right use of the internet. They need to be careful in choosing the information

that they needed in the internet. There are fakes and unreliable sources that may lead to harm.

Internet is also for entertainment and social connection.

The Impact of Internet Use for the Students

Cohort research design is used in this study. This research was done to know how

frequent students use internet and how they use it well. It is a descriptive quantitative research,

informations were gathered from a population and analyzed according to statistical methods.

Internet nowadays is people’s best friend. They always rely on it whatever they do. The

internet has a massive advantages that helps people in many ways. Researchers wants to study

about how internet affects the life of students. This research shows negative effects to the

students and has less support in studying. Half of the respondents answered that they use internet

most in social medias and online games and not in studying. A research must gather much more

informations to know the types of people who rarely use the internat as a learning device. It can

help people in the near future.

Impact of Internet Usage on the Academic Performance

 It is a descriptive and inferential research design. It uses primary and secondary sorces of

informations to distinguish if the internet affects the studies of a student.

Internet is one of the most popular source of internet nowadays. It is where anyone can

get their needed information and have communication with someone far away. One advantages

of internet is that it gives us lot o informations and data so students use it as substitute for books

and other references for their studies. It is use to define what are the effects of using the internet

to the academic performance of a student. In addition, internet provides an environment where

people can participate in exchanging informations (Rose & Fernlund 1997). The research study

clearly tells us the impact of the internet to people. Al it says that the internet have benefited

people but impact negatively to the students who uses it because of online activities which leads

to spending less time doing house and school works. To reduce the negative effect of the internet

to the students, educational institutions can advise the parents to monitor the use of internet of

their child to lessen the harms and risk that may lead to negative effects.

Importance of Critical Thinking for Student Use of the Internet

It is a research that uses descriptive, causal, and longitudinal design. It is also a

qualitative study assess behaviour of the students by a survey conducted in universities to know

the number of students who uses internet for academic purposes.

In this study, many students were being dependent on the internet for their needed

information which leads to harm and risks. The number of students who are dependent on the

internet are increasing. We all know that internet plays a big role in our daily lives. Internet

makes our life and studying more convenient. As the time goes by, internet evolves and many

people learns new things and new websites appear, different uses and purposes. The students
need critical thinking skills to recognize the real use of the internet. Improving internet will help

us big not only in studying but also in our everyday life. But, students should not rely on the

informations in the internet because sometimes, the information you see there came from

illegitimate sources, or simply fakes.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Many studies have claimed that people may use the Internet addictively and that this can

cause harmful effects on individuals, academic problems, changing their social behavior, habits

and abilities in a negative way. Based on the Operant Theory in psychology, learning is the most

powerful small units of accomplishment which are quickly reinforced. Similarly, it is stated that

using computer or internet allows the user to experience a level of control which is unattainable

in other activities.

This theory explains that the computer obeys commands once it is issued. It is not the

same as dealing with people; computers can do whatever the users want automatically. Naturally,

this level of control is quite fulfilling and reinforcing for those who have little sense of control in

other areas of their life. And this theory aims to make people have a proper usage and limitations

on using the power of the internet.

So basically, the Internet helps us to provide unlimited sources of information to help us

on our academic performance these days. At the same time, internet can control us if we can’t

control our internet usage. Internet helps us to make our works more easier and in just one click

you will get many information than browsing in the library. in other words, internet can be

helpful and destructive at the same time so we need to have discipline on using it.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

 This research question follows the provided roles with regards of internet cases being

studied. What are the effects of the internet in a students education? How useful is the internet to

students in their academic activities? What are the problems faced by students in using online

sources? How students and Teachers cope up with modernization in using the internet in

education? Lastly, what are the views and opinion of the given student respondents towards

internet method in the campus?

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This study will focus on knowing the perceptions of the Grade 11 students from Baliuag

University, Baliwag Bulacan on The Roles of the Internet to the Modern Students. Moreover, this

study covered the coping up process of the students on the modern society. The researchers will

conduct this study on Baliuag University Annex 3 in Gil Carlos St. from grade 11 students. The

researchers respondents strand is Grade 11 GAS students. The population of possible respondent

is 190 wherein they identify the different roles of the internet as a student.

The chosen respondents are fitted to answer our given questionnaires for the reason that

they are living in modernity who are mostly using the internet. Internet acts different roles to the

students’ academic performances in which they can possibly give answers to the given questions.

An interview protocol served as the main instrument of the study and was also used to

clarify vague answers and documentary analysis and was also employed to answer the specific

questions raised in the proposal.
