False Dilemma

Arises when the premise of an argument presents us with a choice between two alternatives and
assumes that they are exhaustive when in fact they are not.
When only two choices are presented yet more exist or a spectrum of possible choices exists between
two extremes.
Characterised by “either this or that” language.
It can also be characterised by omissions of choices.

Logical Forms
Either A or B is true.
Either A, B or C is true.

Fallacy of False Dilemma


Contradictories
-exclude any gradations between extremes
-there is no middle ground between a term and its negative
Example: White and non-white
Contraries
-allow a number of gradations between their extremes.
-there is plenty of middle ground between a term and its opposite
Example: Hot and Cold
