Problem Statement: Flowering plants play an important role in maintaining the
biodiversity of an ecosystem. They are however threatened directly by habitat loss
and indirectly by factors such as invasive species and diseases, pollution and climate change. Plan and design an experiment to investigate the distribution of wind and insect pollinated flowering plants at the SVGCC campus. Title: The distribution of wind and insect pollinated flowering plants at the SVGCC campus. Hypothesis: There will be more insect pollinated flowers closer to the campus especially in areas most visited by students, for visual appeal. Wind pollinated flower will be found farther away in areas less visited like pasture and lawn Aim: to investigate the distribution of wind and insect pollinated flowering plants at the SVGCC campus. Apparatus: line transect (20m string), 15 m area (4), sketch pad, graph paper, pencil Method: • Randomly select four areas around the SVGCC campus. Two close to the school building and the other two at some distance away. • Tie the string to two stationary objects, one at each end, to create a line transect that will span across an length of 15 m. • Record the position of the desired types of plants along the line transect. • Draw the results of the line transect on a sheet of graph paper with an appropriate scale • Repeat this process for the other three areas selected on the campus.
Variables: Manipulated: The areas selected Controlled: The length of the line transect Responding: The types and number of plants found (wind and insect pollinated) Results:
