HR - CVs INTRODUCTION
Read the text carefully. Pay special attention to the words and phrases in bold print. Try to memorize their meaning and
context in which they are used. This vocabulary will be practised through the whole lesson and used in the test.
Traditional CVs (Latin: Curriculum Vitae) used to be compared to obituaries or death notices thanks to the tombstone
approach they use. It means they are similar to inscriptions or writing you can find on graves or in notes about dead
people. They set out or specify personal details, education as well as employment history in a chronological order i.e.
timely way. But today’s specialists prefer a so-called achievement CV i.e. a differently structured piece of writing laid out
or designed and sequenced or arranged for the reader’s convenience or comfort. Resumes or CVs have also become more
company-centred. The information they include is more condensed and targeted i.e. concentrated on the position a
candidate wants get, often arranged in bullet points.
CVs are still an essential part of the job seeking process but their form and layout has changed considerably and keeps
changing. For example, nowadays, as covering letters (cover letters in AE) that give more information about the CV content
is gradually disappearing, CVs started to combine the function of both a resume and a covering letter in one. This makes
lots of applicants or candidates insert or include a section called a personal summary/profile. It should consist of 3-4
sentences providing the most important information about the candidate.
Another growing trend in revamping or restructuring CVs is using visuals. Graphs or charts that present your achievements
can attract attention of potential employers faster. This way of presenting information is also easier to digest or process i.e.
analyse the data. This approach or attitude might serve you well if you want to bag or get a design job or one which is
connected with creativity. If not, it’s better to keep your resume professional and informative with limited if any
infographics or other bells and whistles i.e. items which are supposed to make your resume look attractive. These can
hardly be compelling or attracting, some recruiters might even perceive or consider them as tacky or tasteless. The same is
true about using colour which can be still somewhat of a stretch for traditional CVs i.e. it is not likely to be found in these.
However, if some elements need to be highlighted or emphasized you can bold them or use a different calm colour.
Applicants more and more often adopt or use callout boxes and breakaway text that help their resumes stand out or draw
attention. These are pieces of writing arranged in a special way that makes it more noticeable e.g. text is put in boxes,
underlined or written using a different font i.e. letter style. Careful formatting can really improve your chances of being
shortlisted i.e. chosen to participate in further stages of the recruitment process.
The so-called digital or electronic CVs grow in popularity as well. Especially if recruitment processes are conducted on the
Internet. In such cases special scanners search the content of resumes supplied or provided by applicants. They extract or
select key data. Then an analysis against mandatory or obligatory and preferred requirements is conducted or carried out.
Next CVs are ranked by the number of requirements they comply with or meet. This helps recruiters in shortlisting the
best candidates especially when they have to deal with a large number of applicants. Thanks to such a solution it’s
additionally possible to tighten or limit the search criteria or standards that can help in extracting a sensible short list i.e.
coming up with the most wanted people.
Video resumes are now more increasingly prevalent or common – mostly thanks to services like YouTube. Still, they are
mainly used as a supplementary or additional material that is linked to other files or portfolios presenting candidates. A
video CV is harder to be scanned and it takes as long as it lasts to go through it. So however attractive it might seem, it’s
less convenient from the perspective of a recruiter. On the other hand, video resumes provide employers with an
opportunity to access or find out about applicants’ demeanour i.e. the way they behave, speak etc. which for some jobs is
invaluable or absolutely important.
No matter what a CV looks like one thing still remains pretty clear. Without a professionally crafted or structured resume
either sent by e-mail or published on your social network profile or even YouTube.com the chances of getting a decent job
are pretty slim i.e. not too big.
