Today you will be writing your final SPES paragraph.

rubric to make sure you earn all of your points!

PROMPT: When it comes to the literature we have read this semester a commonality between the texts is the idea of the
individual vs society. For instance, in “Romeo and Juliet” readers can see a decision that is purely based on the feelings of the
individuals (the fighting associated with the feud), but fails to consider the rest of society (the citizens of Verona). Therefore,
answer the following in a well-written, well-developed SPES paragraph on the following prompt: When it comes to
making decision, who is more important: an individual or a society as a whole? You may not use my example within
your SPES.

Just like with your argumentative essay, you may utilize any of the texts that we have read to provide support for your opinion:
The Most Dangerous Game
The Scarlet Ibis
A Raisin in the Sun
The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet
Animal Farm

You may ONLY utilize notes that are in your writing notebooks and the online source for your chosen literary text. Any other
webpages, materials, phones, or assistance from your peers will result in a 0 for your final SPES paragraph of the
semester. Make sure to utilize my comments to make positive changes.

When making a decision, the society as a whole is more important than the individual person. In the book “A

Raisin in the Sun” it clearly states, “She went out and she bought you a house... Well—well—it’s out there in

Clybourne Park (Hansberry 92). This may seem like more to the individual side because the Younger's are buying

their own house, but the people have to see that the family are moving into a predominantly white neighborhood

which could change a lot of good and bad things. This move caused people wanting them to leave and threats if

Walter Lee and his family move into Clybourne Park. The book also states, “Our association is prepared, through the

collective effort of our people, to buy the house from you at a financial gain to your family” (Hansberry 118). Linder

and the community wanted the Younger’s to leave and willing to buy the house from the Younger’s plus giving the

family extra money from what they paid for buying the house. Despite not being wanted, threatened, and offered more

money which the Younger’s need, they were still willing to move into the neighborhood being the only black family

there. It does not seem like this changed anything, but this move can potentially have more african american families

to move in the neighborhood and make the city more diverse. The Younger’s made a change to have the society

become a more diverse and better place. In making a decision, the society is more important than the individual

because people have to look at what the decision could do for the people in the future.
