When 2 Become 1
The weather wasn’t half bad when detective Fatima walked out of her office. It had been
raining earlier and she was afraid that she would have been caught and the storm. It was almost
the new year and she had one day of paperwork left. Fatima could not wait for the day she
retired. Fatima walked into a coffee shop and ordered her favorite drink, a bright pink fruit drink.
There were no available singles tables so she sat at a long table next to these two girls. They
were sharing a textbook and appeared to be studying. “Do you mind if I sit here?” Fatima asked.
“Not at all!” One of the girls said and flashed a cheery smile. She had dyed dark red hair
and a bracelet on. The girls friend had the same bracelet and their names were written on it, Kai
and Sky. Fatima thought they could’ve been twins by how they acted. Fatima was only in there a
short time when she decided to spend the rest of her time alone outside. “Thank you!” Fatima
spoke to the girls as she got up and left the cafe. As she was walking she was caught in another
daydream of her vacation plans. A beach or maybe an inland tour trip? The possibilities were
endless in her mind. Someone throwing a pen at her head awaked her from her daydreaming of
“Ah! I didn’t think I’d see you here! Sorry about the pen by the way…” Casey said as she
run up to her partner. Casey bent down to pick the pen off the floor and threw her arm on
Fatima's shoulder. “We got a new case!” She said and hit Fatima’s head with it. Fatima nodded
“Wow a two in one case? We don’t get those very often...”Fatima spoke with slight
“I can’t wait to get to the first crime scene!” Casey said excitedly. She was practically
When they arrived at the scene the girls were shocked. It wasn’t your average house, this
was a mansion. The lot was huge and would definitely take a while to scan the place for clues.
Fatima’s team should be working on it right now, though they didn’t have the careful eye that
Fatima did. After all, she was crowned the detective for a reason. There was a body right smack
in the foyer of the house. Clearly the culprit had no time to spare. The corpse is fresh as well,
judging by the blood stains that were laid out around the body. They had number markers laid
out around for what appears to be clues they have already found.
Fatima and Casey put on gloves and started to walk around looking at the scene. In the
foyer of the house there was the double door entrance, two large windows to the side of it, tables
in front of each of the windows, a carpet- that was now stained red, a bench on the wall, and
across from that bench was a wardrobe full of coats and shoes. The foyer opened right to a
staircase that went to the other floor. To the left of the staircase was a kitchen and to the right of
it was a sitting room. Fatima had already began to formulate an idea of who killed the
psychiatrist.
“Fatima! We gotta head to the crime scene!” Casey shouted to get her partner's attention.
She whipped her head around to Casey’s voice. While her head whipped around her eye caught
something out of place- a bag in the closet. Casey had already pulled Fatima away so she would

attempted murder. “Yikes… she doesn’t look to good.” Casey spoke. She had pointed at the
wound in the social workers side. Clearly this was the culprits first time killing someone. He was
in the process of being patched up and put onto a stretcher when they got to him.
“Yep”
Fatima took a look around the house. Nothing looked out of the ordinary- for a crime
scene. The door handle was seemingly quickly discarded. It was nowhere to be seen on the lot
according to Fatima’s team. He was stabbed in what appears to be the entryway to the house.
There was a broken vase on the floor and a picture had fallen off the wall. This type of messy
crime was more up Casey’s alley. Speaking of Casey… she was jumping around the house
“Were there any police calls?” Fatima asked the chief who showed up not long ago.
“Yes, two at the same time. Both at approximately 5:49am. One was a family member
finding the corpse of the physiatrist and the other was this guy, the social worker saying he had
been stabbed.” The chief replied while his deputy nodded behind him.
“Oh! That means it must of had to be two different people. It is at least an hour drive
from crime scene 1 to crime scene 2! Or maybe it was a well thought out plan… this one is
“Yeah...” Fatima said and started to look around the house. It had only one floor and two
closed off rooms. One was the bathroom and the other was the bedroom. The kitchen was
missing three knives from their holder and the stove was turned on. The tap was on and the water
flowed into a pot below which had began to overflow. The cabinet was open and there was a red
“Marinara sauce?” Casey said, she had already changed gloves and was about poke it
when Fatima kicked her hand away from the spot. Casey pointed at the seasonings in the sauce
confused. She muttered an okay and left saying how “it was just oregano”. Casey took one look
closer and realized it was not in fact oregano but, marijuana. That definitely confused Fatima’s
team when she had them mark the spot on the floor.
“Hey Casey?”
“Yeah?”
“I don’t know? Soon?” Casey said and went back to searching the house. Fatima grinned
and walked into the bed room with Casey following loosely behind. She walked over to the
closet in the room and started to go through his things. Casey had lifted up his matress and was
“What is it?” Casey asked, stealing it out of her partners hands. Fatima tried to snatch it
back but to no avail. “Oh! Medical records?” Casey said aloud flipping through the files. “Fatima
there has to be at least 50 people in here you could never find it out this way.” Casey groaned
when her partner did not respond to her struggling. A phone book was lugged at Casey and she
caught it.
“The page was marked, and if you weren't as blind,” Fatima said, “you’d see the corner
“There isn’t enough evidence Fatima, you know that.” Fatima shrugged in response.

They started a drive back to the first crime scene and they ran into a few girls on the road,
the same girls Fatima ran into earlier. Casey pulled over to help them out and got out of the car.
“What do you need girls?” Casey said with a warm smile. The girls had a mimicked smile
as well.
“Well, we ran out of gas…” The one with dyed hair said.
“Ah I can help y’all out… Fatima wait here while I grab some gas from the trunk, okay?”
Casey said and ran off leaving Fatima stranded. They stood in awkward silence till the girls went
“Ugh!” After the last groan was heard from their car Casey shouted “Found it!” and
closed the trunk. She probably didn’t hear their fight though Fatima was putting the puzzles
together.
“Okay! Someone wanna show me the gas area so we can get your show on the road?”
One of the girls showed them the gas area and Casey emptied her gas container into their car.
They arrived at the original crime scene shortly after. Fatima made her way straight for the
closet. She pulled out the bag she saw earlier and quickly connected all the dots. There were
ID’s, wallets, and a page from a medical hospital containing the information on the guy who was
murdered. Fatima showed Casey and decided to call the girls number.

“I am Detective Fatima, you and your friend thats with you are under arrest.”
“What for?”
“The murder and attempted murder of Paul DeMartin and Ken Livings.”
“It was rather easy, the medical bracelets on your wrists, the blood dyed hair, the bag
containing your information. You both being sent to the hospital for self-harm issues … you put
all the clues in plain sight.” Fatima said, “We have the license plate and your car will be found
and you guys will be sentenced for a long time.” Kai hung up after that.
