The Escape from The Box
Beep… Beep… Beep… Beep… I open my eyes; the usual brightness of the room immediately
wakes me up. The room is completely white, there is a bed and a window, next to the window is
a door. I know there are scientists behind that window, but I can’t see through it. I see myself in
the window; I have droopy and big eyes, big lips, and a small nose. My freckles cover my whole
face and body. My hair is tied up into a high ponytail, my bushy brown hair looks like it is about
to snap the hair tie, but it still hasn’t. As I am about to get out of bed, the door next to the
window opens. Buzzzzz.
“What?” I ask annoyed.
“I’m just here to give you your breakfast.” A woman walks inside, she has an old and wrinkled
face, it’s my mother. I look exactly like her, and I don’t like it.
“Look, Oakley, I know you’re mad at –”, I cut her off.
“Don’t call me Oakley. My name is 011371, right? Isn’t that what you chose for me?
Didn’t you choose for me to live as a test for scientists just so you could live a rich life?” I yelled
at her. I was furious, just like yesterday.
Two days ago I overheard a conversation about me through my mother’s walkietalkie. The next
day I got told everything, my mom signed a contract to let me be used for scientific tests by Box
Inc. so that she would get 1 million dollars monthly. I have had a lot of pain throughout my
childhood; to see what would happen if a kid swallows heavy medicine for a mild fever, or what
would happen when a kid drinks or eats bad chemicals. Thankfully, none of these tests have

killed me, but I have lost my eyesight a bit in my left eye, have had several surgeries, and many
smaller problems.
My mother looks at me disappointed.
“Alright, well, 011371, here is your breakfast.” my mom said sorrowfully.
She pressed a button and the door opened again. Buzzzzz. Two scientists came inside
with a table and chair. My mother put my food on the table and without saying anything, turned
around and left the room. I look down at the soggy eggs, milk, and sandwich. For seventeen
years, I got told lies. I thought everyone got served breakfast by some strange woman and got
tested. I thought everyone lived like this, in a cube box in front of a window. That is until three
days ago, I got taught that the strange woman was my mother, I didn’t even know what mothers
were. That I was one of the few that lived like this. I found out because my mother forgot to turn
off her walkietalkie when she was serving me lunch. The scientists were discussing me.
“We have to release her someday.”
“But she will realize that she was used and her mom sold her to us.”
“She needs to experience the real life, just like other teens.”
“She will get us arrested!” My mom heard everything as well, she mumbled something into her
mouthpiece and left.
The whole day I was sitting in my bed, shocked. I didn’t say a word at all. All of my questions
that mustered over the years came back, but this time, they were answered. Not until yesterday,
was I furious. Yesterday I got told everything, the contract my mother signed, scientists, money,
and worst of all, not living a normal life. I want to live a normal life, so I decided that I was
going to escape this box.

Last night, I stayed up until 6 in the morning, I know the scientists leave at one in the morning
and the security camera turns off for 30 minutes for a battery change and renewing the storage.
The scientists come back at 2, so I have one hour to leave this building, of which 30 minutes is
getting out of the box. The next morning, I will take a bobby pin out of my mother’s hair.
I wake up, it’s the next morning, I looked up at the giant digital clock above the window,
7:13. My mom walks inside in an hour and 17 minutes. I walk to the window. There is a button
to speak to the scientist.
“Can I go to the bathroom?” I ask while pressing the button. A blank wall opens up, there is a
toilet, shower, sink and a closet with 50 of the exact same outfits. I got ready and sat on my bed
for another 15 minutes. My mom came inside.
“Good morning, 011371!” She says sarcastically, as the table gets set up.
My mother put the food on the table. She leaned in forward to hug me, I tried slipping
away but she caught me in her arms. My hand reached her tight bun and slipped an unnecessary
bobby pin out, I slid the bobby pin up my sleeve and acted as if nothing happened. My mother
left and locked the door. Ha! No need to lock the door, it will be opened soon anyway.
It’s one in the morning, I’m fake sleeping. I can hear scientists shuffling out the room and
closing the door. The camera light stops flashing. Now is the time. GO, GO, GO! I rush to the
door and take my mom’s bobby pin. There are three locks. I unlocked the first lock, CLICK!
Twenty minutes. The second lock unlocked faster, CLICK! Fifteen minutes. The third lock was
definitely a weak lock, CLICK! Twelve minutes’ left. I’m getting better at this, I slowly open the
door, this is my first time in years out of this box. I step outside of the box. Freedom, well, not

yet. I open the door from the room of the scientists, locked. This lock takes way longer to unlock
with the bobby pin. I still have 30 minutes left.
I opened the door, in front of me is a long hallway with many doors. At the end of the
hallway, I see the fire exit door. Fire? What’s fire? I go through the fire exit. There is a pair of
stairs, on every pair there is a number, I’m guessing they are the floor numbers. I go down the
stairs until I’m on the first floor. I go out the exit and I’m in a lobby. The lobby has chairs, plants
and a sleeping man by a desk and a computer. I slowly sneak past the sleeping man on my toes, I
look at the computer, 15 minutes, that little time to escape this whole entire place and be far
away. I run to the big door, quietly of course, the door automatically opens. I let out a little
shriek, not realizing this can be done.
The outside world is dark. I can see tall figures; they look like broccoli. I run up to the broccoli
and see a light coming towards me. It’s a machine on wheels, it stops in front of me. A man rolls
down a window.
“You need a ride?” The man asks.
“Sure!” I replied. I step into the machine.
“Where are you heading to?”
“Anywhere far from here,” I said. I don’t know where to go and what to do, but I escaped the
box, and that’s good enough for now.
