The ambitious project of the Chandigarh Administration for the Nehru Centre for performing arts, Sector
34, has been gathering dust for more than 32 years. The project was shelved in 1984 by the
Administration. Today the structure comprises only pillars as time and weather have worn out the
foundation of the structure. Touted as the only solution to the growing parking problem in Sector 34,
the Nehru Centre for Performing Arts faces a bleak future due to the poor financial health of Chandigarh
Housing Board (CHB). The aim is to establish an international platform to accomplish goals of social
interactions in order to promote Indian culture and cater to the technical aspects of all the performing
arts including music, dance and theatre and also better built environment to artists and performers. The
space would amalgamate all cultural activities under one roof and at the same time change the
dynamics of the Sub city Centre which lacks any public interest and commercial growth. The project
would seek the inspiration from the existing context which is the city.
