PHYSICAL EXAMINATION

Physical Examination skills (as a spinal reflex to be finished in a matter of few


minutes) is a must before you ever thinking about entering PACES exam

This include ALL physical examinations known ever in the medical field

 CVS examination
 CNS examination (with all its varieties)
 Abdominal examination
 Respiratory examination
 Focused examinations (thyroid examination, eye examination, peripheral
vascular examination, ……)
 Special testes (phalen test, tinel test, Schober's test, …..)

IDENTIFYING PHYSICAL SIGNS

It is great that you are excellent in physical examination

BUT
It is useless if you cannot identify the physical signs by your examination

If we teach a non-medical person how to do abdominal examination, he will be a


professional in doing that examination after some practice BUT he will never know
how to identify the physical signs

SO
You will never pass the PACES exam if you and the non-medical person are the
same

ALSO
If you invent physical signs that are not present in your patient, think about a next
PACES trial

CLINICAL COMMUNICATION

The art of history taking from the patient with excellent communication skills
where you are mixing your knowledge as a physician with a suitable emotion as a
human is a practice gained skill which will be monitored in the exam

You should elicit a clinical history relevant to the patient’s complaints, in a


systematic, thorough, fluent and professional manner.

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS

Putting suitable and sensible differential diagnosis for your patient according to
the patient complaint, patient medical history and/or your physical examination
findings will be assessed by the examiners

How you put your differential diagnosis in an order from the most probable till the
least probable will be assessed by the examiners
