Practice Technique #4: First Try

Practicing for performance:

Jury in May? Now is the time to start these techniques, not the last week of April.

To avoid the “but I played it fine this morning” response to your jury, use the “1st Try”
technique at the beginning of April

Should be done 7 days in a row

1) Decide the night before at what time the next day you will perform your piece.
2) Set your timer to go off a couple of minutes before your “performance”.
3) Before this time, practice anything EXCEPT the piece you’re going to perform.
4) At the sound of the tone, take a couple of minutes to mentally prepare to perform.
5) Turn on your tape recorder.
6) Perform the piece without stopping.
7) Reflect on the performance. Make notes of what went well, what didn’t. Give a yes or
no answer to the question “Would I have considered this a successful performance in
front of an audience?”
8) Listen to your recording and see if you feel the same way about your performance.

You can expect that an actual performance would be an average of your last 4 tries.

If you were pleased with those performances, this is good news. If not, you still have 3
weeks before your jury!
