“I would love that, but I don’t know if I could sing in
front of everyone,” David said.
“Ah, I see. You have stage fright,” said Gabriel.
“Stage-what?” asked David.
“Stage fright. It’s the nervousness feeling you get
performing in front of people,” said Gabriel. “I used
to feel the same way, but once I start singing, I try to
forget that people are watching. I’ll give you one tip;
enjoy the moment. Close your eyes, take a deep breath,
and just sing.”
2
“Wow, Gabriel, you make it sound so easy,” said David as
they made their way to school.
David was about to go into his classroom when he noticed a
flyer taped right in the center of the door. It read, “School
Talent Show— Everyone is welcome to participate.” For the
rest of the day, David couldn’t stop thinking about the flyer.
“Remember when you offered to teach me how to play the
guitar?” David asked Gabriel later that night.
“Yes, why do you ask?” Gabriel replied.
3
“Well, I saw a flyer at school for the Talent Show, and I was
hoping you have time to teach me how to play the guitar.”
“Of course, let’s get right to it! What do you want to play?”
“That’s easy, I love Mariachi music!” replied David.
“Mariachi music?” Gabriel looked puzzled.
4
“Yes! Mariachi music is a traditional music style from
Mexico. Mariachi bands are made up of two or more
musicians and play violins, guitars, and trumpets. When
they perform, they wear charro suits representing their
culture,” said David excitedly. He played his favorite
Mariachi song on the radio.
“Sounds amazing! What if we form a Mariachi band for
the Talent Show?” said Gabriel.
5
“That would be great!” replied David. “I think dad has a
trumpet in the garage.” Gabriel had played the trumpet
before in his music class at school, so he felt this was going
to be easy for him. David was determined to learn how to play
guitar in time for the Talent Show.
“You’re a natural!” said Gabriel.
Over the next several days, David learned to play the guitar
and Gabriel brushed up his trumpet skills.
6
“Wake up, David, wake up!” exclaimed Gabriel. “Today is the big
day!” David opened his eyes and crawled back under his blanket.
“What’s wrong David? Don’t you know what day it is?”
asked Gabriel.
“I do, but suddenly I’m feeling really nervous about today,”
responded David.
“Don’t worry, David,” said Gabriel. “Just remember what I told you.
Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and sing. Pretend it’s just us
on stage.”
7
David and Gabriel put on the charro suits that their mom had
made for them. When everyone saw the suits, they ran up to
David and Gabriel to ask them about their suits.
“What lovely suits you both are wearing!” said Yolanda. “What do
they represent?”
“Thanks, Yolanda!” replied David. “They are called charro suits.
In Mexico, a charro is a horseman. Mariachis wear charro suits
to honor their Mexican heritage.
“That’s so cool!” said Violet. “Good luck with your performance!”
8
“The first act of the Talent Show is brought to you by Leonard,”
said Mary, who was the show’s host. Leonard’s act was juggling
oranges. He juggled up to 5 oranges and didn’t drop one!
“Next is Yolanda!” announced Mary. Yolanda showed off a newly
learned dance routine. After a couple more acts performed, Mary
said, “And last, but not least, please give it up for David
and Gabriel!”
Everyone cheered loudly. David’s heart was racing. He started to
feel very nervous.
9
Gabriel remembered David’s advice. He closed his eyes,
took a deep breath, and started singing. It worked!
David was enjoying his performance in front of his
schoolmates and friends. While he sang and played
the guitar, Gabriel played the trumpet. When their
performance was over, David and Gabriel took off their
sombreros and bowed like real Mariachis would do,
honoring the Mexican tradition.
10
The crowd cheered even louder this time. Confetti
fell on top of David and Gabriel. At that moment,
David fell in love with performing and sharing his
passion for Mariachi music. He hugged Gabriel and
thanked him for helping him overcome his fear of
singing in front of people.
11
The next morning, as Gabriel sang his wake-up song
for their neighborhood, David was right next to him
singing along. David felt more confident than ever.
He realized that he would never let his fear keep him
from doing what he loves!
