ABSTRACT

Numerical investigation was carried out to study the impact resistance of aluminium 5083-H116 target
plate against truncated conical nose steel projectile using ABAQUS/CAE. Simulations were carried
out using three target thickness as 15, 20 and 25 mm and the geometry of the target and projectile
were equivalent to the dimension available in the literature. The Johnson-Cook material parameters
were used to define the material parameters of both target and steel projectile. The results obtained
were compared to the experimental results available in the literature and the results thus obtained were
found in good agreement. Further the simulations were carried out to study the response of target
against varying temperature and number of hits. It is concluded that the residual velocity was found
increases when the temperature of the aluminium target is increased i.e. the ballistic limit decreases
with the increase in the temperature of the aluminium target. Also it is observed that there is no effect
of multiple hit on the aluminium I-beam section.
