Writing a

Summary
An effective summary is supposed to:

1. provide the main idea(s) covered in the


original text.

2. be presented in a neutral fashion (i.e. do not


express your opinion about the source).

3. be presented in your own words. Plagiarism


is not tolerated.
Useful tips
1. As you read the original text, to be
summarized, underline its main ideas.

2. Summarize the main idea(s) of each


paragraph you finish reading.

3. After you finish writing, revisit the


original text to ensure you have covered
all the main information.
